Let the over-indulgence in club soda begin

Earlier this summer, while Neil and I were busy shopping at the Birch Run, Michigan outlet mall, we ran across some energy drink concentrate. While the product was clearly intended to be sold as part of a carbonated water beverage system we decided that we could just buy the concentrated syrup and try mixing it with store-bought club soda. Nonetheless, we were both somewhat taken with the idea of homemade carbonated water based drinks, something that was a relatively large part of our childhood.

Last night, almost a month after our trip to the outlet mall, I came home to find that a SodaStream home carbonating machine had been purchased for our apartment. As you might expect, I was quite excited by this turn of events. When I looked in the fridge I discovered two new bottles. It looked like one was filled with home-made energy drink. It looked like the other was about a half liter of club soda. As I didn't know exactly what was going on at the time I left both of these bottles un-sampled.

This morning I finally got a chance to get the run-down on the new acquisition. Apparently, this was purchased as a gift for Neil for his birthday (which, in retrospect, makes a great deal of sense). I was also given a quick run-down on the operation of the machine, which is pretty straight forward. The only bad news was that the energy drink concentrate that we purchased in the US, even though it is from the same company, is not available in Canada yet (we are wondering if we can order it from the US site?).

Anyway, since the acquisition of the machine last night we have really be going through quite a bit of carbonated water, though no more than we would if we had 60 liters of club soda on the kitchen floor. For those of you who are curious, we have consumed at least one (though maybe two) liter of energy drink, one liter of grapefruit pop, and at least three liters of club soda. While I don't imagine that we will be able to keep this pace up forever, I do suspect that as big consumers of fluids that we will be able to maintain a relatively steady pace over the coming days, weeks, and months.

For those of you who are interested, Wikipedia has a neat article outlining SodaStream's somewhat surprising history.

A Few Quick Notes 382

-After several days of temperatures just above freezing we have moved just a little below into temperatures just below freezing. Not surprisingly, the rain of a few days ago has now turned into something approximating flurries. My understanding of the forecast is that we should be having some combination of these to types of weather tomorrow.

-A few days ago we had a family photo session. My father wanted the photos to be taken as we had not had proper family photos take for some time and as the family had grown by one (Rebecca) since the last time we had such photos taken. Though I was a little skeptical at first, my father's decision to have the photos taken in a board room at MUN was likely a good one (I will be a little more certain once we get the photos back from the photographer). Amazingly we were able to move through about 10 different personnel configurations in much less than an hour (the whole process, which involved some set up and two locations took just over an hour).

-The night before, to celebrate Kirsten's birthday, our family, along with some family friends, went bowling. A fringe benefit of going when we did was that we were able to wear our new matching bowling shirts. While we looked pretty amazing, the shirts that Neil and I were wearing were a little too tight (which threw off our second game).

On a personal note, I think I scored a personal best with 195 in the first game.

-I think that there were a few more things that at various points during the past few days I was meaning to write about that I have now forgotten. While a few may have been moderately interesting, I think that for the most part they don't really merit mention, so I guess you might say that I am doing you one last favour for 2009.

A Few Quick Notes 218

-Though this morning started out looking as though it would be more rain and overcast skies, things managed to clear up by about 1:00 PM. Unfortunately, clear skies don't mean no humidity, so I am still sweating away.

-Last night Neil, Rebecca, my father, and I made our way over to the local casino. The idea was to take advantage of several deals Neil had scoped out. One of the deals gave us a $20 discount on our restaurant bill while the other deals meant that we each had $5.00 worth of slot machine credits.

After we eat a very late dinner we moved our operation over to the 2 cent slot machines. Soon after we started playing I managed to enter some kind of bonus round and accumulate all kinds of extra credits. This allowed me to play until after everyone else had busted and still cash out with $5.00.

While I had an enjoyable time hitting the pleasure button I am pretty sure I won't be a regular casino visitor, and certainly not without some kind of similar inducement.

-Earlier this afternoon I baked Neil's birthday cake. Right now I am working main course. Unfortunately our plans for steak fell through when we found that the store had sold out of our desired cut. Luckily we were able to quickly come up with a good fall back plan, cheap pork chops.

-I had my first day of class today. So far things seem to be going well. I was particularly pleased to learn that it doesn't look as though I should have to buy a book for this class. Apparently many of the readings will be made available through an online service (which I will have to investigate shortly).

-Later this evening Neil, Rebecca, and I will be heading over to a local comedy club to take advantage of more birthday and student related deals. If all goes according to plan we will only have to pay a total of $12.00 in admission fees. I guess the great unknown is the price they are planning on charging for drinks (particularly as this is not the cheap beer night). As far as I know this will be the first time any of us have gone to a comedy club.

If this experience is positive I may try to head back for some of the sketch comedy or the amateur night (my preference being the cheap beer night) as each of these have relatively low admission fees.

-I forgot to buy the paper today. Maybe I will need to get my subscription going in the very near future.

A Few Quick Notes 123

-Today has been another overcast day, though with less rain than yesterday. The only good thing about the weather is that the temperatures have been appropriately autumnal.

-Last night I played a game of ultimate as a replacement player. Many on the team, including Nithum, were unable to make the game. Actually so few people were able to make it that we were forced to play with six rather than seven people

Strangely, for the first point, the only time the other team played seven, we were able to hold the opposing team off for several minutes more than we were able to on any of their other points.

-On Friday night a few of the library school types were at Thomson House for a while. Unfortunately it seems that general stamina has diminished since last year as almost everyone was gone by 10:00 when I punched out.

-After Thomson House I joined the few remaining individuals on their trip to a party. Though one of the ideas was to meet some of the new students, this didn’t really happen. For the most part I spent time with the people that I already knew.

-Last night was attended Ren’s birthday celebrations at the Cock’n’Bull bar/pub. It was an enjoyable evening. I was also pleased to find that the pitchers were reasonably priced.
