-After about a week and a half of unseasonably warm temperatures we've again seen the mercury drop to something approximating the seasonal norm (even if we're still a few degrees above where we normally are). The nasty consequence of the warm weather is that much of the snow that we had on the ground melted and then re-froze as ice and because many people hadn't been completely up to date on their sideway clearing much of this ice is now on sidewalks around Regina. Snowfalls, however slight, since the drop in temperatures have conveniently masked much of the ice making walking even more treacherous than it was when it ice was exposed.
-This morning at about 8:30 I went out for a nice shovelling session. I managed to take care of our shovelling and to also shovel the sidewalks of our neighbours on both sides. Much to my surprise, I think I managed to take care of this shovelling before any humans walked along the sidewalk.
-For dinner tonight we should be having a nice batch of mushroom and barley soup. If I decide to be ambitious we may even have some type of freshly baked bread or dessert to accompany the soup (maybe even both).
-I think that after about a month since we first felt the symptons of a cold Jeannette and I are both back to about 98%. There's a bit more phlegm than either of us would like, but it's not too bad.

A Few Quick Notes 615
-After several cold and grey days today was a pleasant change of pace. Eventually it was even warm enough that we needed to use the AC in our car. Of course, even this high wasn't particularly high and was certainly no where near the low 20s that were in the forecast a few days ago.
-Yesterday afternoon we tuned into the livestream of the PC convention in Newfoundland once we learned that the virtual tie on the second ballot was forcing a do-over/third ballot. Not only was it great to see all kinds of people I know (i.e. friends, former profs, former co-workers, and friends of my parents), but it was also neat to watch an entirely unscripted television event. Neither the viewer nor the producers knew what was going to happen and it was exciting.
-For some reason I recently remembered the idea of mushroom barley soup. This morning I started preparing a batch that we could have for lunch. Wow, that was tasty. I'm not quite sure why we haven't been making more of this stuff.
-I saw diagram outlining the ideal viewing areas for the recent Northern Lights eruption and it seems that Saskatchewan was one of the worst viewing locations. I guess now I don't feel so bad that we didn't try to wait for the clouds to clear. Hopefully we'll get another chance soon.

A Few Quick Notes 611
-Today has been variously rainy, cloudy, and sunny. Unfortunately, the sunny portions of the day have tended to be the shortest. Apparently funnel clouds have been spotted in souther Saskatchewan - so there's that too.
-Maybe because of the rain we had over the past few days the mosquitos have been out in full force. While at our Ultimate game on Thursday I received several bites and this afternoon while we were in the garden briefly Jeannette received about a half dozen bites, most of which were through her clothes.
-Yesterday I made a quite enjoyable batch of pea soup for dinner.
-We've been on something of a fruit leather making kick recently. We've made three batches in the past few days. I think we're particularly motivated to make this much because each successive batch has been more successful than the previous batch. I'm convinced that part of the recent success stems from my decision to include both a wider variety of fruits and also to include the juice from one or two lemons.
As Jeannette can attest, the only problem with so many successful batches of fruit leather is availability of so much fruit leather. If one's not careful one can in a matter of minutes eat the equivalent of several pounds worth of fruit. I guess there are worse things one could be binging on.

A Few Quick Notes 602
-Though cloudy, today wasn't a particularly cool day. Since our sudden and unexpectedly resilient snowfall of a few days ago I expect full-blown winter to arrive with each dawn. When I leave the house and discover winter hasn't yet arrived I'm both pleased and disappointed.
-The arrival of winter would be even more welcome if our fireplace was fully functional. At the moment the chimney is in need of a serious cleaning. Until we have it cleaned we won't be able to determine if it's safe to use, and if not how much work might be required to make it so. While I'd really like to have a fully functional fireplace this is likely something that will have to wait until at least next year.
-We went on a somewhat lengthy shopping trip this afternoon. As usual, once we're out on our weekend shopping trips we keep remembering additional items that we've been meaning to buy. Also, at least this normally happens, we tend to forget a handful of items necessitating future trips. Fortunately, the items that we forgot today weren't so important that we'll have to head out today or even tomorrow.
-My 'smart' phone, or at least its operating system, has been behaving somewhat erratically for the past few weeks. It seems that the major update has really negatively impacted the operational capacity of the phone - despite the fact that this was presumably exactly the opposite of what the developers intended with the new update. Anyway, it's definitely been a frustrating way to waste a few hours.
-Now that we're a few weeks into fall the sun has started setting not long after I return home from work. While this is to be expected, the transition has been happening a little more quickly than I expected. It won't be long before my walks to and from work will occur mostly in the dark.
-A few days ago I combined a few ingredients and made some pea soup. I'm continually amazed at how simple, yet tasty, pea soup can be. Maybe even more impressive, is that the stuff seems to keep getting better in the following days.
-Turns out homeownership is definitely time-consuming. This weekend I had the pleasure of spending a fair bit of time installing a single board above one of our basement windows. Not only will this board be used to hang a blind, it will also improve our house's security as it will also prevent one of our windows from easily being pushed in from the outside. While I'm not pleased at how long this project took, I am pleased with the results.

A Few Quick Notes 558
-On Thursday we received about 10-12 centimetres of snow in just a few hours.
[Embedded video]
By yesterday afternoon/evening the snow was almost completely gone and it was almost 10.
Though Environment Canada is suggesting that it is currently about 1 in the region, I don't believe this. The continuing formation of ice suggests to me that it is at least below freezing and that it has been for a while.
Anyway, temperatures and conditions have definitely been yo-yoing recently and it is less than fun.
-Tonight Jeannette and I will be attending an Old Man Luedecke concert in Windsor. The question on everyone's mind surely is whether or not he will perform the crowd favourite Joy of Cooking?
[Embedded video]
-I think I will be making some leek and potato soup shortly. Much to my surprise, we were able to buy both leeks and potatoes at our local farmer's market.

A Few Quick Notes 511
-I guess today was a pretty nice day, though I didn't really go out and experience it first hand.
-Yesterday night Peter, Jeannette, and I had llama burgers for dinner. Though the texture was a little different, I would say that llama burgers were definitely worth trying again.
-Instead of spending time outside today I spent much of my day inside and on the computer. This morning I started things off by looking into some information on pensions. I then spent this afternoon and evening transcribing an interview. Talk about an exciting day.
-I made another batch of pea soup today. It will only take about five more such batches until I have used all of the ham I have in the freezer.
-It seems that I don't have much to talk about when I spend most of my day in front of a computer engaged in school-related tasks.

A Few Quick Notes 503
-Today has been a pretty great day all day long. Now, presumably just for a seasonal effect, a few snowflakes are falling, though not really staying around.
-Our Ultimate team played pretty poorly in our game last night. Our poor play wasn't helped by the fact that were were missing quite a number of players. In the end we lost the game by about 7 points. Hopefully things will go better next week.
-Did you know that you can Flickr user's photostreams as RSS feeds? I know that I just learned this a few days ago and was a little saddened to think that I hadn't been taking advantage of this feature for the past few years (assuming it has been around that long).
-I am presently in the midst of making batches pea soup and butternut squash soup for dinner tonight.
The butternut squash soup is turning out a little thinner than I hoped it would. I will soon be trying to resolve the problem by supplementing the soup with some carrots and potatoes. These new additions should give the whole thing a little more body, and make it a little less like yellow water. Hopefully they aren't strong enough flavours to overpower the squash.
-We are still going 'strong' over at Doyle Pitches. My favourite of the day, at least so far, is "Doyle: Pig in the City."

A Few Quick Notes 493
-For better or worse, since my last update, it has continued to snow. Because of the near-zero temperatures we haven't seem much accumulation since about the time of my last post.
-Earlier today a friend of mine asked for a recipe for some lentil stew that I made about a month ago. Of course instead of providing him with something I of a straight forward answer he got the following:
This was then supplemented with the following nugget:
I am curious to hear how this turned out as these may be some of the least precise recipe instructions I have ever given anybody.
-Last night we managed to lose our ultimate game by a single point. Even more impressive than the margin of our defeat is the fact that the final point was scored with less than a second left on the clock. Bummer.
-This afternoon Jeannette talked me into going to see the movie Black Swan with her and a few of her friends. While I will give this thing credit for being well acted and, at least as far as I could tell, technically well crafted, the experience was somewhat less than enjoyable. Maybe I am just turning into my father, but I really am not too interested watching someone self-destruct on screen, no matter how artfully it is done.
-My pea/lentil soup and bread should be ready for consumption shortly. After dinner I will have to be sure to get back to work.
-Earlier today a friend of mine asked for a recipe for some lentil stew that I made about a month ago. Of course instead of providing him with something I of a straight forward answer he got the following:
I don't happen to have the recipe on me at the moment (nor did I the last time I made it), but I am quite willing to try to re-create what it was I did.
The last time I made it I think that I didn't start by adding some onions and oil to the pot, but that is normally how I would start. From there I would add the potatoes and lentils. I base the number of potatoes on the size of the batch I want to make, so maybe 3-4 cubed potatoes. In terms of lentil volume, the original recipe called for next to no lentils, I like to add close to a cup, again, it is flexible. At this point I would also add water and seasoning. As far as seasoning goes, I use vegetable bouillon/stock and black pepper. I would use maybe two tablespoons of the powdered stuff and a teaspoon or so of pepper. Add enough water (or you could use liquid vegetable stock) to cover most of the ingredients. I would say that it is better to start with less water and add more later than too much and need to boil it off.
(I typically use green/brown lentils and let them soak for an hour or two before cooking. I have never used canned lentils, but I presume you could. If you use red lentils I don't think it is necessary to let them soak).
The original recipe calls for carrots and celery, and suggests that they should be added only at the end of the cooking period. I find this works, but many people don't really like almost raw celery and carrots in their stews so I tend to add these ingredients at about the same time as everything else. It should also be noted that basically any vegetables you want should work. (For instance, when you were there I left out the celery because I know Rebecca doesn't like it and replaced it with things like frozen beans and corn.)
The great thing about this recipe is that it is quick, unlike regular stew. In all you probably only need to cook this for about an hour.
I realize this description/recipe has been a bit rambling, so if you have any questions feel free to write back or call.
This was then supplemented with the following nugget:
Also, upon consideration 1 cup of lentils seems like a lot for 3-4 potatoes, I might dial that back a bit.
I am curious to hear how this turned out as these may be some of the least precise recipe instructions I have ever given anybody.

A Few Quick Notes 478
-We are in the midst of a multi-hour rainfall. When this rainfall started I was hopeful that it would be brief and relatively inconsequential. As time has passed the rain has continued to come down with increasing intensity. Bummer.
-Yesterday evening I was one of about 12 people to attend my union local's meeting. At time we had trouble making quorum. For one reason or another we dropped the pretense of calling each other "Brother so-and-so" and "Sister so-and-so" during the meeting.
-I made a rather large batch of chicken noodle soup for lunch. It is a good thing that this batch turned out pretty well as there is quite a bit left.
-Due to popular demand I have decided to provide our readers with another puppy video.
[Embedded video]
While these videos still have some way to go before they become YouTube classics, I do think that this one is a fair bit better than the one I posted a few days ago.
-It seems that Danny Williams will be leaving politics and that Kathy Dunderdale will soon be Newfoundland's premier. Given that between now and October 2011 there will be a leadership convention and provincial election I think it is fair to think that Newfoundland politics will soon start to become a little more exciting.

A Few Quick Notes 463
-We had something of an overcast day today in Halifax. As I didn't really spend that much time outdoors the absence or presence of sun had little effect on me.
-It seems that yesterday's election in New Brunswick will result in a change of government. After a few years out of power the Conservatives have been returned to government, of course without Bernard Lord as leader. While I was more aware of the fact that New Brunswick was having an election than I ever have been before, I somehow know next to nothing about what drove this election or what any of the key issues were. Consequently, I have no idea why the voters in New Brunswick opted for such a change (that being said, I have to assume that attempted sale of the power utility may have had something to do loss of support of the Liberals).
-I recently received my new US passport, which means that I got it just in time for my upcoming trip to Phoenix, Arizona. Hopefully my first trip to a place with 'dry heat' will go well.
-I cranked out four loads of laundry today. Wow, that was a fair bit of laundry.
-I made a really sub-par batch of black bean soup this evening. I think that the soup was somewhat undermined by my inclusion of some really bad ham and canned rather than soaked black beans.
-In relation to yesterday's post about strange news article titles, I thought that I should pass along this gem from Newfoundland: Mount Pearl fire drill turns serious.

A Few Quick Notes 374
-Today was another less than perfect day in Halifax. While there were periods of no rain, the day was marred by longer periods of rain.
-We had chicken noodle soup for dinner tonight. While I originally was hoping to make the noodles from scratch I eventually ran out of time and ended up using some from a box. I guess my noodle making attempt will have to wait for another day.
-Neil and I have our first Winter league ultimate game tomorrow. While we recognize the names of a few people playing in the league we don't know any of other members of our team.
-For the past few days I have been spending a fair bit of my time marking. The batch of essays I have before me need to be done by Monday. I guess this means that I should probably try to complete at least another two or three this evening.
-Neil and I gave each other haircuts today. While Neil's hair wasn't that long, mine was approaching 12 inches in places. I think that both haircuts were justified and will be good in the long-run.
-As much as I would like to keep on going, I think it is probably best if I try to make my way back to the aforementioned marking.

A Few Quick Notes 363
-So far today has been pretty decent, though nothing particularly special. At times it has a been a little overcast, though at other times the sun has come out and made it look quite nice.
-Neil and I both really enjoyed last night's Ransom A Myers Science and Society lecture. Not only was the speaker, Andrew Weaver, informative, he also presented the material in an engaging way. Unfortunately, the post-lecture question and answer session was used by a few local activists to highlight upcoming events. While I don't know how everyone else feels about these incidents, but I know that I find such interjections really off-putting and they make me quite uncomfortable. That there is a risk that such 'questions' might be posed is almost enough for me to think that in most public lecture settings we should just forgo the question and answer session
-The post-lecture awkwardness reminded me of the question and answer session that followed an Oliver Sacks talk I attended in Montreal a few years ago. In this instance people seemed to want on-the-spot neurological diagnoses. These may have even been more uncomfortable for me than the event promoting that I experienced last night.
The other parallel between the two talk was that, through no fault of either presenter, I nodded briefly off during both. I am not sure what it is about large lecture theatres, but they seem to induce sleep quite effectively in males in my family.
-I think that we will be having chicken noodle soup for dinner tonight. I guess I might need to get started on this in the not too distant future.
-The other thing that I need to get started on are my readings for my upcoming week's classes.

While not great, I think comes close to representing what it is I need to read to prepare for class (though there are some other things I need to read for other assignments).
-After a rather dismal September it seems that I am now trying to up my post numbers for October (not that this really matters). I guess I think it would be nice to hit 365 by the end of December, so maybe that is why I am making a bit of an effort to post more frequently.
-There were some other things I meant to comment on, but it seems that I can't remember then at the moment.

A Few Quick Notes 358
-My recollection is that today (Saturday) was pretty nice, though I think that there may have been at least a few overcast periods. I am a little less certain of today's weather conditions than normal as I haven't really spent much time outside today and my desk window is now relatively obstructed by my plants.
-For dinner tonight we had a some chicken noodle soup that I made. The broth was based on some chicken breast bones that I boiled while I was making dinner yesterday. We also had some nice rolls that Neil and Rebecca purchased this afternoon. While I don't normally consume bread products with my meals, these really complemented the soup nicely.
-I have quite a bit of reading to do this week, and every week until the end of the term. Though I haven't done as much reading as I might have hoped today, I have managed to put at least some time in. Though not exactly reading, I also managed to put some time in to locate a few articles and then print these articles.
-This afternoon I spent about an hour, or maybe a little more, catching up on some filing that I had allowed to accumulate over the summer as I worked on my thesis. Not only are things organized again, but I have managed to eliminate a few stacks of paper that had been on my bedroom floor for a few months. Sadly, I am almost out of room in my two-drawer filing cabinet. I think that it is quite likely that I might have to buy another one in the not too distant future.
-For the past few months there have been a number of incidents in the South End of women waking up to find a man watching them while they sleep, not surprisingly this individual has been referred to as a 'night watcher.' Shortly after a police sketch was issued a few days ago an arrest was made and a general sigh of relief breathed by residents of the South End. It now seems that the suspect has been released, presumably putting us back to square one in terms of night watcher issues in the South End.
-For some reason, a recent announcement that in Nova Scotia schools will have to play the national anthem every day really upset me. Though I can't quite articulate why this frustrates me, I think part of it is that such a scheme just seems hokey and low-class (kind of like plastering images of a country's leader on street corners). Maybe part of the issue I have with this policy is that the whole thing seems to really skirt the real issue, which is encouraging some sense of national pride among Canadian/Nova Scotian students. If this is the goal it seems to me that it would be more appropriate to teach students why such pride is merited rather than just try to get them to learn the words to the national anthem. Furthermore, such a program, by associating the national anthem with the start of the school day, could have the opposite effect and actually cause students to associate the national anthem with something that is almost universally understood to be unpleasant, the start of the school day. Anyway, if I can figure out what I really find frustrating about this decision I will try to let you know.
-As I believe I mentioned recently, a number of the pepper plants are now bearing fruit. At the moment the peppers are purple, though they are supposed to turn red when they are ripe, which seems like a helpful indicator. The downside is that we are likely to end up with more hot peppers than we need in a few weeks instead of getting a more tapered ripening period.

-I think that I also mentioned that one of the tomatoes is showing signs of redness. I guess it will still be another few weeks before it ripens.

-The plants in my bedroom window are really starting to obstruct my view. Each day the tobacco leaves grow larger and more numerous, working their way towards completely obstructing my view. If things keep going like this I will no longer be able to see whether my neighbour is still taking her dog to defecate on the grass in front of my window.

(Edit: In the two days since this photo was taken some of the tobacco plants have grown a number of inches. The tallest of the plants is now just a little taller than the middle tier of the hanging plant shelf.)
-There is a rather noisy party that has been going on for some time on a property not to far from my apartment. While I normally don't mind a little light partying, this has been going on for some time and is definitely distracting me from my studies (hence the blogging). Though they are showing no signs of quieting down, I really do hope that it ends sooner rather than later.

A Few Quick Notes 317
-Today was a beautiful day. The cloudy periods that were forecast were kind enough not to materialize this afternoon. Instead we had a relatively sunny and pleasant afternoon and evening. Now that the sun has set the temperature has started to drop, but it is still rather pleasant.
-A few of the lettuce seeds that I planted recently have started to show signs of growth, though at the moment they are only a few millimeters tall. The other recently planted seeds haven't yet started to show any signs of growth. I am hoping that with another few days of good sun I should see some rather significant progress.
-As today was quite nice I was able to move some of the plants to the balcony for a few hours. Though I have no real evidence that this will be particularly effective, it does seem that they are likely to receive at least a little more light in this location than they are to get in either my bedroom or the living room.
-We had homemade chicken noodle soup for dinner. I thought it was pretty passable.
-Tomorrow we will be heading out for a free Thai meal provided by the Dal math grad students.
-Aside from the freeness of the meal, I am looking forward to the meal as it should be during the meal that we are met by my friend Greg who will be coming into town for a few days. Hopefully Greg and I will get a chance to hit a few of the locations we visited when we came here on vacation in July 2005. Shockingly, we managed to visit all kinds of Halifax attractions, including the Dartmouth ferry and Bayer's Lake in just a few days. I imagine that this time our sightseeing will be a little more circumscribed, largely as the visit is shorter and also because there are a few places we have already thought about visiting.
-This evening Neil and I attended at talk by Tony Burman of Al Jazeera English hosted by the CIC at King's. While we both expected the talk to be about reporting in the context of Al Jazeera and the global south, as the lecture title suggested, it was really almost exclusively about Al Jazeera English's attempt to be carried by Canadian cable carriers and their CRTC application and why we should support such an application. While I likely would have attended such a sales pitch had I been given the opportunity, it was just not what we expected.
On the other hand, it was kind of cool to attend a talk by the head of a major international news channel. Though what this talked suggested to me was how much emphasis the channel was putting on having their application approved by the CRTC.
One thing that I did learn at this talk that I found to be of some interest is that one can view Al Jazeera English online for free (here, or here), if one is so inclined.
-Yesterday I subscribed to three new podcasts, as I have all kinds of free time that I need to eliminate. Instead of comedy podcasts, as has been my habit recently, I went for a slightly more eclectic mix. As I seem to be having a hard time segueing into the names of the three podcasts, I will just drop them now: Philosophy Bites, Planet Money, and Selected Shorts. So far all three of them seem pretty good, though I can't say that I have given either Philosophy Bites or Selected Shorts a thorough listening to yet. (Several moments ago, while editing this post, I subscribed to two more: Ethics Bites and Philosophy: The Classics.)
-For the past few days I have been meaning to mention that we are presently in the midst of a provincial election in Nova Scotia. For the most part if I didn't know this already I wouldn't be likely to pick it up by walking around downtown Halifax. It seems that it is a relatively low key election so far. And as I don't get to listen to the morning show on CBC I am really not all that in touch with how the campaign is going. I am hoping a few more canvassers swing by our apartment so I get a chance to talk with them and push my election issue (more accessible bottle return options).

A Few Quick Notes 271
-After yesterday's above zero temperatures, today's below zero temperatures have had the somewhat unwelcome effect of turning large sections of the city into ice sheets. Unfortunately, it seems that a number of the city's sidewalks seem to be presently located below these ice sheets. Aside from this, and occasional blasts of cold wind, things were pretty nice today.
-On Saturday I finally prepared some beans/legumes in my new pressure cooker. The preparation of such dishes was why I was given the pressure cooker in the first place.
For my first attempt I decided to go with a lentil soup recipe from the cookbook that came with the device. Not only was the soup relatively straightforward, basically just vegetables and lentils, it turned out quite nicely. Even Neil and Rebecca seemed to think that it wouldn't be too bad if we had it again. Hopefully I will be able to try a few more such dishes in the coming days and weeks.
-For those of you who are into comedy podcasts, episode 46 of Mike Schmidt's The 40 Year Old Boy is great. As far as I am concerned, the highlight of the show is the extended story about Mike going to Lake Tahoe with a friend to run a sports gambling system that the friend devised. As one might expect of 20 year-olds try to pull something like this off, it quickly went south and Mike and his friend were soon forced to fend for themselves in a relatively unknown city.
-On Saturday night our Ultimate team was once again smoked, though we did manage to hold things together for the better part of the first half. As usual, we really let things get out of hand as the game wore on.
-A few days ago I noticed that one of the recipes on the same page as a biscuit recipe that I frequent use was a recipe for "Cowboy Coffee Cake." For some reason I found this name rather tempting and have been trying to come up with a reason/time to make a batch.
After finishing dinner this evening I felt that the time had come and that I would try to whip up a batch of Cowboy Coffee Cake. Now that it is out of the oven I can't quite understand why they tried to associate with cowboys, it looks like pretty standard coffee cake as far as I can tell. I guess I should try a piece while it is still warm.
-This morning I removed the 'stache (olibama) that I acquired on Friday. I was pretty sure that its presence wouldn't endear me to the class to whom I had to give a lecture this morning.

A Few Quick Notes 264
-Though we had a pretty rough night last night and into the early hours of the morning, things seemed to have really cleared up by mid-morning. Unfortunately, much of the precipitation that fell as either rain or ice pellets turned into water and then re-froze as the day progressed. As things stand now, much of downtown Halifax, at least the sidewalks, seem to be covered in ice, or slush that hasn't yet turned into ice.
-One of the consequences of the less than pleasant weather was a delayed opening for Dalhousie. Shortly after I woke up this morning I learned that they wouldn't be opening until 11:00, which meant that I would be missing my first class of the day. Later in the morning I learned that my second class had been cancelled by the professor. In many ways, though I did appreciate the extra sleep, I would have liked to get these classes out of the way and not have had the week delay that is likely to occur. The other aspect of the closure that caused my excitement to be somewhat muted was that I had to head in to pick up a book from the library anyway.
-Though it is only increasing at the rate of a minute a day, I am really starting to enjoy the extra daylight we are getting as we head into spring. Within a few weeks I should be able to leave my evening class before the sun sets.
-I am making some chicken soup for dinner tonight. Because I happened to remember that I had a bag of barley I threw some in. Hopefully the barley will be a positive addition.
-Last night Neil, Rebecca, and I played a game of Settlers of Catan (along with the Fishermen of Catan addition). Somehow I managed to smoke them in about 30 minutes (or maybe even less). It seems that almost before we really started to play I had won (thanks to the hot 8s). Amazingly, I also managed to win the two games of Cribbage I played against Neil, making my gaming success rate abnormally high.
-Amazingly, the donated bus stop bench I mentioned a few days ago is still at the bus stop. I really thought that one of the many drunks that walk by each night would have either stolen it or broken it, but this seems not to have happened. Maybe it is because it is winter, but I still haven't seen anyone sitting on the bench.

A Few Quick Notes 241
-Today was a beautiful day. The sky was clear and the temperatures were pleasant all day.
-For dinner this evening we had roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, and vegetables. The beef was particularly beefy, which is how I like my beef.
-After dinner I started to make pea soup. The primary goal was to use some ham that I cooked a few days ago, it also was a good place to use some celery that is just a few days from kicking the bucket.
-A few days ago while looking at a flier I noticed that the store was selling a few things that I was interested in purchasing. Most importantly, the store was selling a card table for less than $40, which seemed like a good price.
This afternoon Neil and I took the bus to the store and scooped up the last of the tables. While in the store we also managed to pick up a few additional items that were on sale for at least 50% off of the regular price.
-In a break with recent tradition, last night I actually managed to socialize with some people other than Neil and Rebecca (not that there is anything wrong with them). I first went over to a classmate's house for a few beers before heading to a party at his friend's place. Though I didn't know all that many people I had a good time. It was particularly nice to get out and relax for a few hours.
As it was Halloween and a costume party I ended up dressing up. As I didn't have much time or money with which to pull together an elaborate costume I went as a pirate (vest, bandanna, and nautically themed 'tattoos'). Brian, my classmate, made a rather elaborate Dale Earnhardt, Jr. outfit. Amazingly, while everyone was in costume very few, if any, of the attendees were in gore based costumes. As I am not a fan of such costumes I was quite pleased with the choice of costumes worn by the other guests.

A Few Quick Notes 191
-Today has been another in the series of less than stellar days that we have had recently. Unlike recent days, thundershowers have been forecast for this afternoon (something of a meteorological rarity in St. John's).
-On Saturday night I went bowling with Greg and Nikita. We first played a game of ten pin before switching over to five pin. The five pin game we played was incredibly close. As we entered the tenth frame it was still anyone's game, though I quickly managed to knock myself out of contention by muffing up my first ball. Eventually Greg found his way to the top, and Nikita to second place, leaving me at the back of the pack.
-Yesterday, while looking through the pantry, I came across some bean soup mix. Not surprisingly, as I am fixated on cooking beans, I decided to try to prepare some of the soup. While I seem to have followed most of the instructions and used most of the called for ingredients it still seems as though the soup as that less than ideal smell that I so frequently get when I prepare beans.
While I have not yet had a chance to try the soup (it will be served for supper tonight) I am pretty sure that it won't be that good, and yet another piece of evidence to suggest that I am completely unable to prepare beans (including coffee).
-This morning, as I prepared myself for work, it appeared to be raining. Given this information, and a desire to have dry clothing at work, I decided to wear my rain suit to work. It seems that almost as soon as I started on my way to work the rain basically stopped, though I was still wearing my rain suit (and sandals). As I continued to walk I hoped that the rain would start, mainly to justify my wearing of a somewhat preposterous outfit (particularly if it is not really raining).
Anyway, the rain stayed away and I was able to arrive at work completely dry, though this had nothing to do with the fact that I was wearing a rain suit.
-We played a few games of Settlers yesterday. I managed to win a few of the games. By the end of the day I was considered enough of a threat to merit the pre-game burn call (an honour that had previously only been bestowed upon Neil). Even more impressive was that I will still able win the final game even though the "burn had been called."
-While looking through some LCC schedules today I learned that their is a class number for materials about the 'hardcore unemployed.' Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to find the class number that would be used for materials about 'hardcore folk music.'
-As it was a little cool this morning I decided that I would wear a sweater under my rain suit. As I was to be heading to a library it seemed most appropriate for me to wear a cardigan. Once I arrived at work I found my boss was also wearing a cardigan, and the other worker had a cardigan (though she wasn't wearing it). I presume my other co-workers would have been wearing cardigans had they not taken today off.
-Just as I was about to head to work my mother asked me if I had been planning on shaving before going to work.. Surprisingly, I actually had been planning on shaving, but seem to have let it slip my mind in the pre-work rush. I guess it will have to wait for another day (likely Wednesday).
