Ultimate update

That's ultimate as in ultimate frisbee, not as in last post of the evening. I've returned from the game Cameron was unable to attend. As our captain's email wasn't working today, the team had only the minimum three people show up to play. The other team had 6 guys ready to play, so we decided to pick up a player from the last game, a 7 point penalty. However, a guy on their team saw what we were doing and protested that the player we were picking up was above the skill level of the players we were missing. He justified his protest based on the fact that it was playoffs. So it looked like we were not going to pick him up. As our team grumbled the protester said we could have him for 10 points, and we agreed, although we did declare that it was a cheap move. Game time came around and the other team was a little slow getting to the line. We mostly jokingly called delay of game and claimed three points (10 minus 7, that is). Normally, the pick-up penalty is given to the opposing team at the beginning of the game. However, their team declined to do this, saying they would add the points at the end. Our team played well and the final real score was 43-34. I took off to catch a bus and therefore do not know who won, because I do not know how many points will be claimed for our pick-up. I hope to find out in the next couple of days what the result is. It will have a great effect on the playoff schedules for both teams.

A Few Quick Notes 193

-Aside from a few rain drops, today has been a rather nice day. Possibly even more important than the quality of the weather today is that fine weather has been predicted for the next few days (a prediction that I hope comes true).

-Today when searching by ISBN in Amicus I had 5 records returned for a single ISBN. While it is likely that this is not the record in this category, it is a much larger number than I would have expected. One would hope that only a single record would be returned for most ISBNs.

-It is possible that I have secured a house-sitting gig for the latter part of July. If this works out it would tie in nicely with my early August house-sitting obligation.

-I really dislike serials that under-go name changes. Not only have such changes caused me to have nightmares but they are also a bit of a pain to catalogue and I can't imagine that many people are able to follow the changes.

-We had a frisbee game. We all seemed to play much better this time around. In the end we managed to hang on to the lead long enough to secure the win.

-A few of us went to Bitters for trivia. Unfortunately, we didn't do all that well, but better than at least two teams. We were particularly hammered by a comic book category on which we scored zero.

-This year I have seen a number of very large ants. I don't recall seeing such creatures in past year. I wonder if Newfoundland has a new invasive species.

A Few Quick Notes 177

-While not all that warm, today has been a pretty nice day. Temperatures were steady for much of the day, hovering within a degree or two of 10. More importantly, the sun has been out since this morning, and even more unusual was that it's presence wasn't marred by clouds diminishing its effectiveness.

-This morning, as is our habit, Kirsten and I made our way over to Georgetown Bakery to pick up a dozen sesame bagels. Unlike other trips, in this instance we left the house before 8:00 AM. The only negative side-effect of this early departure is that we weren't able to stop by and pick up a drink at the local coffee shop, as is our practice, because the store didn't open until 8:00 AM

The great benefit of the early departure time was that it meant fewer customers where there, and that a much greater selection of goods was available (not that this last fact mattered as we were only interested in buying one thing). It was very enjoyable not to have to worry about person ahead of us in line buying all of the particular item we had our eyes on.

The only exciting part of the return trip was the belated visit to the coffee shop, and that wasn't that exciting. Kirsten and I kept things simple by sticking to our usual orders.

-Earlier this evening, while I was in the midst of baking some cookies, I noticed that the barbecue that I had started in the late afternoon seemed to have gone out. In some ways this wasn't all that surprising as we have been doing a fair bit of barbecuing these past few days, and not once have we run out of gas. Anyway, the problem was that we now had a partly cooked pork roast on the spit and no effective means of finishing the cooking.

Eventually my father was able to head out to pick up more gas, but not without a delay of at least an hour. Since his return the gas has been hooked up and the flow and flame re-started. Hopefully things won't take as long as I fear they will (if they do we won't be eating until about 9:00 PM).

-Yesterday my team played its first Ultimate game of the year. Much to our surprise we won 15-0, and managed to finish the game in much less than an hour. While I don't think that it is likely that we will win all of our games with such authority, it would be nice if we continued to score as effectively.

A Few Quick Notes 93

-Today was another overcast day in St. John’s, though sun did manage to make its existence known for a few minutes this afternoon. It seems that just about every day since I have been back in St. John’s has been overcast and cool. Maybe by the time I leave things will have started to turn around and back again.

-Tonight was “analog payment” night for Frisbee. As of right now I have guaranteed myself a spot but I have not signed up with a particular team or person. I guess in a few weeks (hopefully less than that) I will be able to figure out how this is all going to work out for the summer.

-Bitters no longer sells Strongbow or Newcastle Brown Ale. I was told that these products are no longer distributed in Newfoundland. This was very disappointing news as they were my two favourite beverages (along with that old stand-by water) at Bitters. In many ways I am not surprised, if one can only rarely find Newcastle on tap in the UK, why should one expected to find it all over the place in St. John’s. I just hope that they still have it at Thomson House when I get back.

-I still have heard nothing about the ILL request that I placed yesterday at the public library. What is taking these slackers so long? I know there wasn’t a location listed with the Amicus record, but still, a full 24 hours and nothing? I haven’t been there in a decade and then this is how they treat me on the first transaction after my return.

-For those of you that are interested, there will be a performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations by Mary O’Keeffe on harpsichord tomorrow night at the MUN School of Muisc. Tickets are $10 for suckers and $5 for students and seniors. My understanding is that things are to start at about 8:00. And no, I was not paid for this plug.
