I am currently in the midst of grading a batch of first year social science essays. What always impresses me about the essay grading process is that so many of the same mistakes and missteps are made by relatively large proportions of each class.
Not that I expect people to necessarily find or read this, but I thought that I should maybe try to compile a few tips based on some of the most common problems I have encountered while grading essays.
Anyway, here goes.
1 – Though it seems that most of the essays I grade do it, starting one’s essay with a broad, but unsupportable, claim is not a particularly good idea. The person grading your essays know that you don’t really know that ‘Everyone loves X.’ Don’t start your essay by giving the grader a reason to think that you don’t know what you’re doing.
2 – Proof read your essay before submitting it. Make sure that what you are saying is what you actually want to be saying. Nothing gives away a rush job like an incoherent essay.
3 – Make sure that you use the right word. There are all kinds of homophones out there waiting to be misused. Don’t fall for them. ‘Poll’ is not the same as ‘pole’ which is not the same as ‘Pole.’ Not only are such mistakes embarrassing in hindsight, but they also display a lack of attention to detail and are frequently a good sign that the writer doesn’t really know much about what they are writing about.
4 – You aren’t Dickens - so don’t write like him. Though they may be tempting, avoid artificially long and complex sentences. While these guys may juice your word count they also make the essay harder to read (and many times there are also issues on the execution front). Clarity is essential. If the grader can’t read the essay it doesn’t matter that you managed to squeeze in a few extra words.
5 – Make sure that your essay is the required length. If the assigned essay is to be five pages long then it should be five pages long. Though reasonable graders will usually accept some flexibility around the edges, being 20% or 30% over or under is asking for trouble. The worst part about mistakes of this nature is that they are pretty easy to avoid. Before you even submit your essay you know how long your essay is and how long it should be. Make sure that these two things match.
6 – If the assignment requires that you use a certain number of scholarly sources then use at least that number of scholarly sources. Failure to meet the basic requirements as outlined in the assignment is a great way to lose points. Oh, and while you’re at it, why not trying using a standard citation format?
7 – An unsubstantiated fact or direct quote without a source isn’t worth very much these days. It is essential that you cite the sources of your information. Not only will this help you avoid charges of plagiarism, but it will also help you strengthen your position. And if you have done the work why not demonstrate that this is the case?
8 – Avoid repetition. Graders know if you are just saying the same thing again and again. And it gets old fast.
9 – Don’t write with your thesaurus. In my experience overuse of one word is almost always better than the misuse of several words. If you would like a larger vocabulary, always a laudable goal, try hitting your dictionary in the off-season so you are ready to go come essay writing season.
10 – Don’t underestimate the intelligence of the person grading your essay. If it is a rush job they will know. If you don’t know what you are talking about they will know. And there’s a good chance they will be able to tell if you have claimed a professional’s writing as your own.
Bonus Tip – And maybe this is the most important one, start early and do the work. It will show.

A Few Quick Notes 552
-Though chilly, today was a beautiful day. Much to my surprise, there are even remnants of the dusting of snow that we received a few days ago. I think it is safe to say that we are definitely into late fall now (even if on Wednesday I saw people sitting on the sidewalk in shorts and a tee-shirt while reading the paper).
-Today, at Jeannette's insistence, we made our way to a local Christmas craft fair. While much of the content was a little too Christmasy for me, there were a few vendors selling some really neat products.
Though for some time Jeannette has been telling me that this thing is a big deal, I really didn't think that it was going to be as big as it was. Not only were there more vendors than I expected (maybe even twice as many), the event seemed to be attracting hundreds of people, likely thousands over the course of the three-day event. It was really quite surprising.
-A few days ago I had the pleasure of doing some multiple choice grading. The upside is that this process is much easier and faster than essay grading. A downside is that, because I wasn't involved in the creation of the test, I don't have as good a sense of the areas where the students are and aren't doing well.
-I am in the midst of keeping a food diary for kidney stone related reasons. Knowing that I will have to record each thing I consume has encouraged me to think a little more closely about my consumption patterns. While, at least for the most part, I don't think I am too bad, I do think that this process has encouraged me to skip a few unnecessary even snacks that I might have otherwise been careless enough to have. (I am not sure how the observation process is impacting the data collection, but there is definitely some impact).
-I should probably head back to the kitchen to check on some food I am preparing for dinner. Assuming all goes well we will be having some dal (with vegetables) and rice. If I manage to get the recipe down I may end up making this on a semi-regular basis.

A Few Quick Notes 534
-I think today might have been overcast with a few sunny periods, but the more I think about it the more that I really don't remember much of today's weather. I guess I was paying attention to other things.
-Last night Neil, Rebecca, Jeannette, and I tried to go to a local restaurant to take advantage of a Groupon that I purchased a few weeks ago. Much to our surprise, the place was absolutely packed. I guess the fact that it was about 6:00 PM on a beautiful Friday evening may have had something to do with it. (Somehow all of us forgot to piece together that it was Friday evening and that Friday evening might be a particularly busy time.) We eventually decided that we weren't wiling to wait such a long time for a table in a restaurant that would likely still be overfilled when we got the table.
-For breakfast/brunch this morning I made a loaf of bread. It seems that I am getting a fair bit better at judging the volumes required for a single loaf of bread. This is good, as sometimes it is a good move to make a single loaf instead of a half-dozen loaves.
-As expected, Dal's tuition will be going up for next year. I am still of the opinion that the province may be shooting itself in the foot by allowing this to happen, but obviously they feel differently. I guess time will tell - but I think that they really can't risk driving away too many more young people given their already lopsided demographic balance.
-Just moments ago I finished some grading that I have been working on for the past two days. On both days I really put in a few good hours. Though these days were not particularly pleasant, that I have finished means that I should be able to promptly get back to studying.
-The Lounge Lizards are great. I really don't listen to them quite enough.

A Few Quick Notes 533
-Today was a beautiful, though chilly, day.
-I am now up to 6 for 34 in this year's RUTRTW. I suspect that my last cup, which was a winner, will be my final cup for the the year, so, amazingly, I think I came in a little better than expected by the end.
-Yesterday Jeannette and I were walking downtown when we were handed Porter promotional items. Upon closer inspection we learned that what we had been handed were unassembled balsa planes. Today I decided to assemble my plane.
[Embedded video]
-I have been doing a fair bit of grading today, I guess if I want to reach my daily goal I should head back to my stack of exams.

A Few Quick Notes 527
-Though today started off being a fair bit above average it seems that things have now turned a little overcast. Hopefully this change in sky colour won't lead to a change in precipitation levels.
-I am now down to 4 for 31 in this year's RUTRTW contest. I have to say, my heart really isn't in it any more. I keep buying rims just expecting to to lose (and then become somewhat comforted by the fact that my prediction turned out to be correct). Maybe I will find a way to get my groove back for next year.
-My Ignatieff rally video seems to gotten a few views, and this is after I deleted the first version to replace it with a higher quality video. I suspect that things will level off shortly, at at least by the end of the campaign.
-Early this afternoon I picked up a few more essays to grade. I suspect that almost as soon as I finish grading these essays it will be time to grade final exams. I can't wait for that to start.
-Yesterday, while we were making our way to the rally, I happened to notice a sign promoting upcoming shows at our local comedy club. Much to my surprise, it seems that one of the hosts of Stop Podcasting Yourself, Graham Clark, will be appearing there this weekend. This is great. I hope to be able to attend the Thursday night show, though I am not quite sure who I will be able to convince to go with me.

A Few Quick Notes 522
-Today has been a pretty nice day so far. Actually, it was even almost warm enough that a jacket wasn't necessary. Sadly, we are supposed to head towards snow this evening.
-I am now down to a measly 4 for 27 in this year's RUTRTW contest. This is definitely a disappointing performance.
-We played our final Ultimate game of the season tonight. Not surprisingly we managed to lose. Aside from the uneven score the game was actually pretty fun to play. As I won't be playing in the upcoming Spring leagues I suspect the next time I will be playing is this Summer.
-A few days ago I went to the hospital for a routine x-ray. As usual, I was one of the youngest people in the waiting room.
-It seems that we will soon be facing a 33% increase in our laundry prices. Bummer. Overall we have seen a 60% increase in prices since we moved in a few years ago. Things are definitely not heading in the right direction on this front.
-I had to give a lecture on Thursday. While the lecture was ongoing I couldn't really tell how it was going, for the most part the students seemed pretty non-responsive. Fortunately, two students came up to talk to me after the class about the subjects covered in the lecture. This suggests that at least a few people got something from the experience, which is comforting and pleasing.
-It seems that we are now officially in election mode in Canada. Jeannette, Rebecca, and I watched the confidence vote yesterday and Neil, Rebecca, and I watched the coverage of Harper's trip to Rideau Hall this morning. On our way from Ultimate Jeannette and I spotted re-election signs for Megan Leslie (given that they were re-election signs it is clear that they weren't just left-overs from the last election).

A Few Quick Notes 506
-As some of you may know, today was pretty snowy. Amazingly, I did seem to capture the short sunny break that we had this afternoon.
[Embedded video]
-Much to our surprise, there has been some traditional media interest in the Doyle Pitches blog. If anything comes of this expression of interest I will be sure to keep everyone informed - but definitely keep your eyes peeled.
Also, remember to keep checking back for new and exciting Doyle Pitches.
-I am still getting used to my new glasses, though the more that I wear them the more I think that they still need to be adjusted a little. I guess I will look into this when I go back to the store to pick up my second pair of glasses (my sports goggles).
-I did a fair bit of grading today.
Score
Cameron 25
Neil 0

A Few Quick Notes 488
-Amazingly, much of the evidence of yesterday's flash snowfall has vanished. Maybe even more surprising is the fact that today was actually quite a nice day, it even went so far as to be above freezing.
-Yesterday I purchased a package of red peppers from the grocery store only to find that they were some of the worst red peppers I have ever had. What is strange is that while they don't appear to be spoiled they are definitely note quite as crisp as they should be and they are certainly lacking the flavour I am accustomed to finding in most of my red peppers. Hopefully I will have better luck next time.
-On a related note, Jeannette and I took a trip to the local farmers' market only to make a single substantive purchase (a $1 turnip). Of course, to find this turnip we had to brave dense groups and elbow our way past the better part of Halifax's aging yuppy population.
-Our Ultimate game didn't go particularly poorly tonight though we were at least a few points behind for most of the game. In the end the result was less than surprising and ended with us getting the loss. One of the most enjoyable aspect of the game was running across a member of the opposing team who happened to be on my first Ultimate team in St. John's in 2005.
-I am starting to think about getting ready for Christmas, for better or worse this hasn't yet meant that I have actually done that much to get ready.
-Aside from our Ultimate game and trip to the market, I feel as though I spent most of my day marking. Fortunately I am now just about done for the night/day/term. Before it I know it I will be back to studying for my comps.

A Few Quick Notes 487
-Today has been incredibly warm. At the moment Environment Canada is reporting that it is 11 C, which is even warmer than it was this afternoon. Of course, these warm temperatures are possibly the precursors of a rain and wind storm that is to hit the region shortly. Hopefully this last part of the equation doesn't come to fruition and the warm temperatures a sign of nothing more than warm temperatures.
-Today, while walking to school, I noticed that the electrical infrastructure along my street was humming. At other locations along my walk I noticed a similar phenomenon. While walking around in my neighbourhood this evening I noticed that the humming was still on going. Though sound in and of itself is not particularly ominous, that it is all of a sudden coming from pieces of infrastructure that haven't historically emitted a sound is definitely a little off-putting.
-Jeannette was kind enough to forward me the following video about the TA experience.
[Embedded video]
It seems hardly like fiction.
-I think my first high school principle may have just died. I will need to confirm whether or not this is actually the case.

A Few Quick Notes 469
-Today was both overcast and cool. Fortunately, at least until now, shower and/or flurries have held off.
-The batch of bean soup that I made a few days ago I still alive and kicking even though I have been doing my best to kill it off. Hopefully after another one or two lunches I should be able to put this batch of soup out of its misery.
-Given the relatively cool temperatures that we are experiencing right now I am not particularly looking forward to the intramural Ultimate game that I am scheduled to play tonight. Given that we are scheduled to play the MBA students it would be nice if we are able to pull out a win.
-In the past week I have been quite engaged in TA related activities, not only did I spend a number of hours grading papers, but I also invigilated three exams, and gave a lecture. This later event took place this morning. Given the non-responsiveness of the class I can't really tell how it was received, though I fear that I bored them.
-I guess I should get back to work.

A Few Quick Notes 467
-Today turned out to be a much more pleasant day than I expected, largely because we didn't have the rain that I expected. It looks as though we are due to be really slammed tomorrow though.
-I managed to spend a good chunk of today dealing with TA related activities. It seems likely that I will also spend much of tomorrow dealing with similar activities.
-Yesterday, because of a TSOYA-related blog post I ended up subscribing to a few new podcasts.
Freakonomics Radio, a podcast based on the book and blog by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner. This afternoon, while walking around campus, I managed to listen to a few episodes and was quite impressed. I found the episode dealing with education reform (and the use of personalized teaching approaches) in New York City particularly interesting.
Another one I happened upon during this podcast directory browsing experience is called Hmmm.... and seems seems to be related to RadioLab, already a favourite of mine, though with somewhat different content and an emphasis on shorter, easier to access pieces.
To The Best of Our Knowledge, the podcast that lead me down the path to the aforementioned podcast subscriptions, seems to be more general in nature than the other two that I mentioned. Unfortunately, unlike the other two (because of the length of the episodes) I have not yet had the chance to listen to a full episode. Nonetheless, the part of the one episode that I did hear was pretty good.

A Few Quick Notes 419
-For the second day in a row, after about five days of grey, we have blue skies. Though there is some suggestion that this may take a turn for the worse later today, I am hoping that we will be able to avoid precipitation until at least about midnight.
-I think that my Roll Up the Rim to Win record for this year 5/23, though it may have been 5/25 (at one point I was given an extra cup). Though this may not seem like much, I did much better that I should have and much better than I have done in past years. The major problem with my winnings this year were that they tended to be donuts instead of more useful prizes. In the end I think I gave away most of my winnings.
-Yesterday I was able to submit my exam marks, meaning that I have now (to the best of my knowledge) completed my grading for the semester. Though it hadn't really set in as of last night, I think I am now starting to feel a little more relaxed. One of the things that I seem to have learned from my recent grading experiences is that cursive is almost always more difficult to read than printing. Why school insist on teaching students cursive is beyond me. What might be gained in speed is certainly lost in legibility.
-I guess I should explain my noticeable internet silence of the past few weeks. It seems that I was engulfed in something a perfect storm of time commitments. First I had to kill of a number of school related tasks (mainly assignments and studying for an exam), while doing this I also had to deal with a variety of grading and RA responsibilities. Finally, social commitments, particularly that two friends stayed with us for 4 nights, managed to consume most of my remaining time. The time I had to devote to the internet was thus compromised (and because of this I am sure you were all saddened).
-Last night I had arranged to get together with Peter and just hang out for a while. After making these plans I learned that there was to be a conflicting poli sci grad student event that I felt obliged to attend. Peter agreed to take one for the team and accompany me to this event.
We finally arrived at the destination at about 8:30 (an hour and a half after the event was to have started) only to discover that the house appeared relatively dark. After a few minutes of hemming and hawing we finally decided to commit ringing the door-bell. Almost as soon as the host opened the door (maybe it was the look of surprise on her face) it became clear that the event was not tonight. Apparently the event was actually scheduled for tonight. I felt like a bit of an idiot, though also somewhat relieved as it meant that I didn't have to participate in a social engagement that I was entirely thrilled/sufficiently energized to attend. As Peter and I were walking away I suggested it was a 'party win.' (I should be clear that the reasons I didn't really want to attend relate to my level of exhaustion and not the host or other guests).
The best part, at least according me, was that when we got home I checked my email and found that the host had actually sent me emails indicating that it was on Friday (she even used the word 'Friday'). Of course, I don't know how to bring this up to her without sounding like a jerk, so I guess I will wear the shame of showing up on the wrong day for a while.
-Tonight, instead of attending the aforementioned potluck, I will be attending a retirement party for one of the professors in my department. The only problematic aspect of this event is that it is being hosted at a location somewhat far away from the centre of the city. So far I have been able to secure a ride to the event. I am hoping to arrange a ride back at while at the party, though if I fail on this front the back up plan is to walk the 4 km to the nearest bus stop. Can't wait.
-It seems that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador accidentally expropriated an old paper mill. This just seems like something that should be so hard to do that it should never happen accidentally. This just seems to provide more evidence that this whole expropriation thing has been an ill-conceived mess since day one.

A Few Quick Notes 397
-Today was close to 0 for quite a number of hours. The result of these near-freezing (but not quite freezing) temperatures is that much of the snow that we did have has now melted. While this means that Halifax doesn't look particularly wintery, it does mean that walking on sidewalks is relatively easy and safe.
-We had another Ultimate game tonight. Though we started with a seven point deficit (we picked up a player from another team) we somehow managed to forge ahead and win by several points. While I didn't have a particularly impressive game, I did manage to make a few nice catches and floor burns on my elbows.
-On a related note, it seems that the inventor of the Frisbee, Walter Frederick Morrison, died on Tuesday.
-I have some school work that I should be doing at the moment.
-I finished my grading today. Now I just have a few administrative tasks to complete before I return my marked exams to my supervisor.
-We had roast beef and roast potatoes for dinner last night. I was pretty pleased with how things turned out.

A Few Quick Notes 396
-We had another marginally cold day today. This means that it was below freezing, but not particularly cold or unpleasant. Amazingly, we still haven't had much snow this winter (so I presumes that this means that we are due for a dumping).
-Yesterday we had beef stir-fry for dinner and tonight we had shepherd's pie. I guess I am not doing such a good job avoiding red meat (at least intermittently I have been more successful than I have been these past few days).
-I am thinking that I might try to start some temporary terrariums with herb/for herbs. Just imagine how much time and effort I will save by not having to water this plants on a regular basis. Then, once they are a big bigger and the warmer weather has arrived I can transfer to the outdoors and more standard living conditions.
-I still have some marking to do, but so far it is going well.
-On Monday I have a mid-term. This will be the first mid-term exam I have had to write in years. As I have been completing the readings and whatnot I am not particularly concerned about my knowledge of the material, but I guess I should try to do some reading and reviewing before the exam.

A Few Quick Notes 392
-Today was another rather chilly day, though nowhere near as cold as it was earlier this week. While there were a few snowflakes today, if my memory serves me correctly, there really wasn't any accumulation to talk of.
-We had a nice tofu and chicken stir-fry for dinner tonight.
-I need to try to go to bed early tonight so that I can wake up early tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, I really don't see how this is going to turn out well in the end.
-While I was sitting in class this afternoon it became apparent that for some reason just about everyone in class was out of it, even those of us who tend to be quite active and participate frequently. This was particularly strange as I am quite confident that many of us keeners completed the assigned readings, so it wasn't as though we weren't ready. The most likely explanation is that many of us were tired as a result of working late last night to complete papers that were due during today's class.
-I have some marking and research work that I really need to work on tomorrow. Hopefully my modified schedule won't mess me up too much.
-Word on the street is that Neil is a little dissatisfied with a few of my recent posts. He thinks that they were a little to self-referential and void of content. While I think that he is likely correct, they did meet the minimum requirements to qualify for the blog-off, which we at least in part suggested by him, so I don't feel too bad about them. Furthermore, as some of us may recall, he managed to squeak to victory by making a series of such posts in the dying moments of last year's competition.

A Few Quick Notes 388
-Today, unlike much of the week up to today, actually felt a little bit like Winter. Not only has the temperature been below freezing for much of the day, but we also had a little snow (though not as much as other parts of the Maritimes). As much as I enjoyed yesterday's spring-like weather, I am also enjoying the slightly more wintery feel of today.
-Oh man, what a week for domestic achievements.
On Tuesday I did some grocery shopping, though maybe not as much as I should have.
On Wednesday I baked bread and washed a few loads of laundry.
Yesterday I did the normal dinner stuff, but nothing particularly fancy (though we did do some late-night grocery shopping).
Today I went shopping grocery shopping again and baked a cake (dinner prep will start shortly).
The trend should even continue into tomorrow as I plan on doing some cleaning and preparing a turkey.
-Yesterday, as part of my TAship I had the pleasure of assisting in the invigilation of an exam. It was actually pretty fun just to stand up front and watch people as they wrote their exams. One of the aspects of the experience that I enjoyed the most was seeing almost everyone's head be tilted in the same direction (down and towards their writing space). Those that did not fit this model really stood out (these tended mostly to be left-handers in right-handed desks as opposed to cheaters).
-It seems that Elizabeth Marshall has been been appointed to the Canadian Senate to fill the vacant Newfoundland seat.
-Today I decided to have pancake mix pancakes for breakfast. I guess I was interested in comparing the ease and quality against my Batter Blaster experience of last December. Sadly, the Batter Blaster really didn't fare well against the batter mix. What I did learn is that pancakes from the mix are really straightforward and probably something that I should consider making for myself on a more regular basis.
-I went on a bit of a non-alcoholic beer binge last night. I think that over the course of about 3 hours I had almost half a dozen cans of the potent brew.
-Today, in the Globe and Mail movie reviews I came across the name of one of my sister's friends (the movie in question is Grown Up Movie Star). This was kind of funny as I don't think that I would have imagined such an experience when I first met this person as a 5 year-old. I guess if this movie makes it to theaters in Halifax we will have to make an effort to go see it.
-Don't forget to tune into the upcoming blog-off, it should be an exciting race.

A Few Quick Notes 378
-We are in the midst of a period of rather nasty weather in St. John's. For the past few days things have been generally wet and overcast, with intermittent periods of snow, just to mix things up a little. Unfortunately, it does not look as though things are really going to get much better in the immediate future.
-Last night, with my friend Greg, I made my triumphant return to George Street. We started things off at Trapper John's, where Greg's younger brother playing. Before things got started we were standing at the bar when I noticed that our high school chemistry teacher was standing just a few feet away (she didn't look as though she was in the mood to talk to former students) We then made our way over to The Martini Bar, an establishment that is typically too upscale for me, to see a friend who was doing the band's sound. Eventually, or once things began to wrap up at The Martini Bar, we made our way back to Trapper John's to catch the end of the band's show. Just before the band finished up Greg realized that we were just feet away from another former teacher of ours from junior high. Though we hadn't seen this guy in almost 15 years he immediately remembered both how he knew us and also our names. I was quite impressed.
Probably at about 3:00 we decided to head out. While I was fine with walking, some others in our party were interested in taking a cab, so we decided to take a cab. Not surprisingly, trying to get a cab as all of the bars cleared out did not turn out to be a particularly easy task. The process was complicated by us going to multiple strange locations. Fortunately we were able to eventually get a cab and make our way home.
While nothing particularly spectacular happened, I had a great time (though I don't know how many more similar nights I will be able to handle this trip).
-This afternoon Kirsten, Neil, Rebecca, and I all went to a former co-worker's house for brunch. We had traditional dishes like bacon and sausage, but also a great grits dish. The afternoon was really quite fun. I think Kirsten really liked playing with their small dog.
-Later this afternoon, maybe it might even be safe to say that it was early evening, Neil, Rebecca and I decided to try to do some Christmas shopping at da Mall. Unfortunately, not only was the place maggoty, but none of us really found anything that we were interested in buying. In general, though this is not meant to reflect negatively on my companions, it was a pretty unpleasant trip.
-Yesterday evening, after putting in quite a few hours, I was finally able to finish my exam grading. Already I feel more relaxed and able to enjoy things. I am particularly looking forward to tomorrow as I will be able to sleep in without guilt and then spend the better part of the day resting, relaxing, and reading (at least that is my plan).

A Few Quick Notes 376
-We had heavy rain for much of the day today. As I had to make the trip to school on foot this was not a particularly desirable weather condition. Fortunately by late this evening things started to calm down to the point that it now seems quite calm.
-While at the grocery store this evening I was seduced by the Horlick's and the Ovaltine Cookies, two products that I have consumed on a rather irregular basis for the past number of years. So far I can confirm that the very reasonably priced Ovaltine Cookies are definitely as good as I remember. I imagine that I will give the Horlick's a shot tomorrow and will then be able to tell you whether I still have a taste for it.
-This afternoon I had to swing by the hospital for an x-ray. The process was pretty quick and to the point, actually I think that they were using some kind of digital x-ray that really sped things up.
While waiting for my x-ray I was sitting in a gown and robe in the waiting room when a hospital employee walked into the room carrying a Christmas decoration. To no one in particular, but loud enough that we could all hear, he proclaimed that it was time to put up some decorations. He decided to put the decoration on the wall right next to the where I was sitting (not that this is a key detail).
Shortly after he reached the wall I heard something fall, followed by the employee stating in a rather exasperated tone "Oh poop, right in the garbage." It seems that he dropped a thumb tack in the garbage. He was then kind enough to point out that there was only one thing in the garbage can (an empty coffee cup), a level of fullness with which he felt comfortable digging around to find the pin.
After putting up one more decoration he left and I didn't seem him before I completed my visit to the x-ray department.
-I had to lead a review class today. Unfortunately, though not surprisingly, I wasn't really able to engage the students. I think that part of the problem was that it was the last class of the year and I hadn't taught them before.
-I had a rather unsuccessful trip to the grocery store this evening. Not only did I forget to even look for cream of tartar, they were out of the right kind of tofu and frozen raspberries, and I completely forgot to use the lone coupon I had with me. I guess this means that I will have to go back tomorrow.

A Few Quick Notes 374
-Today was another less than perfect day in Halifax. While there were periods of no rain, the day was marred by longer periods of rain.
-We had chicken noodle soup for dinner tonight. While I originally was hoping to make the noodles from scratch I eventually ran out of time and ended up using some from a box. I guess my noodle making attempt will have to wait for another day.
-Neil and I have our first Winter league ultimate game tomorrow. While we recognize the names of a few people playing in the league we don't know any of other members of our team.
-For the past few days I have been spending a fair bit of my time marking. The batch of essays I have before me need to be done by Monday. I guess this means that I should probably try to complete at least another two or three this evening.
-Neil and I gave each other haircuts today. While Neil's hair wasn't that long, mine was approaching 12 inches in places. I think that both haircuts were justified and will be good in the long-run.
-As much as I would like to keep on going, I think it is probably best if I try to make my way back to the aforementioned marking.

A Few Quick Notes 366
-We have had some rather nice weather these past few days. It seems that it hits about 10 degrees by mid afternoon, which is just about right for walking, and then drops to near zero in the evening, which is just about right for studying, reading, and sleeping.
-It seems that I will have a few Halloween parties to attend tomorrow evening. The first I will try to visit is a poli sci grad student event at a local bar/restaurant. The idea is that they will order some appetizers and a few pitchers and then people can get other things.
The second party I plan on attending is the history grad student event. I have been invited to this event because I am taking a graduate level history course this year (and the professor hosting the party is teaching the course). Anyway, aside from the bus ride out, I am looking forward to meeting a few of the history students/types.
Oh, my plan for a costume (all creative credit must go to my friend Jess) is that I will wear a black shirt and pants and then a white collar and go as a priest. The great thing about this is if I decide the costume is too much for me to handle I can take the collar off and then just be a regular looking guy. As I am not really particularly into Halloween costumes I think that this strikes a nice balance between close to nothing and an actual costume.
-On Wednesday we had our final Ultimate game of the fall season. In contrast to past game, we really came out swinging and dominated the entire game. We ended up winning 15 to 0.
I should mention that although the score is clearly quite lopsided, the other team really didn't seem to be playing that poorly (just not scoring). Furthermore, they are one of the most fun teams to play against. There were no rule disputes or poor calls, it was really great.
After the game we invited the other team to join us for a drink at the local country bar. We chose this bar because the last time we went the place was absolutely empty and we were able to take advantage of a few of their amenities (mainly the Wii and the full-size basketball net). This time it seemed that we weren't so lucky, instead of the place being empty we walked in on a multi-week karaoke contest.
Not surprisingly, our group wasn't really into the karaoke contest. Surprisingly, the bar's workers were really quite insistent that we move some of the furniture so that everyone could see the stage. In basically every other matter the staff were great, they frequently came back to make sure we had everything we needed and at one point brought out four large baskets of party mix (a snack food).
I guess I would have to say that after a little bit of initial hesitation, I had a really good time with the other team, and just generally at this particular bar (even if it was a country bar).
-It seems that I am up for another round of lithotripsy on Tuesday. I am a little curious to see if this is actually going to happen or if they will somehow manage to screw up my booking between now and then, as they have done twice already.
-It seems that I am on a bit of a humus tear recently. For the better part of the past few weeks I have almost always had a batch of humus in the fridge that I can tap into at any time. I guess this is likely an indication of my busyness and the fact that this is a food that I can just start eating with little prep work.
-I have been rather busy with grading for the past few days. My plan is to kill off the remnants tomorrow, which should then allow me some time to prepare for my upcoming classes.
-I should probably stop wasting time and get back to at least one of the many school-related things that I really should be doing.
