High points of the Canadian entertainment scene

Though we normally live a relatively quiet life, for the past week I have really been hitting the town in an attempt to up my Can-con street cred.

Last Sunday Jeannette and I attended a screening of the made-in-Saskatchewan movie Corner Gas: The Movie (obviously a spin-off from the similarly named TV show Corner Gas).  Though ravaged by a Globe and Mail review (that hardly discussed the movie), Jeannette and I both enjoyed the experience and thought the movie was pretty much what you would expect from a TV to movie translation of the show.

On Tuesday Jeannette and I attended the annual Vinyl Cafe Christmas show (an event we also attended last year).  This is the third time I've attended a Vinyl Cafe live show and the third time I have enjoyed the performance.

On Thursday a friend was kind enough to invite me to the Regina stop of the Trailer Park Boys Christmas tour.  Though not the greatest theatrical event of the year, it was nice to see Ricky, Julian, and Randy in person (while living in Halifax Mr. Lahey could routinely be spotted near our apartment and Bubbles could be seen at Bubbles' Mansion events - like the shopping car race we once happened upon).

This weekend, if I can get my act together, I hope to catch one of the Cirque du Soleil shows happening in Regina.  Because of Jeannette's clown phobia there's no way I'll convince her to attend and as I haven't made any attempts to find someone else to attend with if I do end up going I think it will have to be alone.

And if I really wanted to 'do it all' I could also attend the upcoming Tom Jackson Huron Carole event (though at this point it seems very unlikely that I will be going this far in a quest to consume as much Can-con as possible).

Not a good week for Bubbles

Yesterday it was reported that Bubbles Mansion, a bar that was party owned by Trailer Park Boys's Bubbles (Mike Smith), closed because of a drop off in business.

Today it was reported that the Toothy Moose, another bar owned by the same set of owners, has also had problems, this time with the licensing authorities. It seems that they have had a tendency to let too many people in and serve some of them too much alcohol. It seems that as a consequence of these violations the bar will be forced to close for 5 days in the near future.

As much as it is going to hurt to have to be closed for some number of days, in the long run I don't imagine that have a reputation for having too many people having too good a time will really hurt the bar. I know that I am much more interested in going there now that I was 5 minutes ago.

A Few Quick Notes 413

-Today was marked by period of intermittent rain. When it wasn't raining it was grey and felt as though it was getting ready to rain. I guess it is a good thing that I didn't have much to do outside today.

-Sad news in Halifax. It seems that after a four-year run, Bubbles Mansion has closed. While I kept meaning to go, somehow I never quite managed get through the doors (though I did at least make it to the doors on one occasion). In honour of this establishment's passing I will re-post a video from a Bubbles Mansion shopping cart race that Rebecca, Neil, my mother, and I stumbled upon about a year and a half ago.

-Today I decided to pick up another case of 8 2 liter bottles of club soda. I am thinking that I may try and snag another 8 bottles tomorrow.

-As predicted, I did some laundry today.

Does this make me a paparazzo or does it just make me creepy?

Almost immediately after I awoke this morning Neil asked me if I was interested in going to see Steven Harper, Canada's Prime Minister. It seems that Neil had learned that Harper was to be making some kind of announcement with Darrell Dexter at the Pier 21 Museum. It turns out that the announcement was about the Pier 21 museum becoming the a national museum, like the Museum of Civilization or the National Gallery. If you are interested the announcement has been covered by CBC and CTV.

Given my inclination to see politicians in the flesh I decided to join him on the trip.

Shortly after we arrived at Pier 21 we learned that the actual announcement session was not open to the public. We decided to camp out across from the vehicles associated with Harper's entourage. I assumed that staying by his security personnel would give us indications about when he was likely to exit the building, an (obvious) assumption that turned out to be pretty on the money.

Unfortunately, it seems that we arrived long before people began to exit the building. We also seem to have arrived long before any of the others hoping to get a glimpse of Harper.

Eventually, after maybe an hour, we talked to a security guard who said something about seeing Peter MacKay, Newfoundland's voice in Cabinet, someone we never did end up seeing. At about the same time our local MHA/MLA, Leonard Preyra, came out and ended up walking right past us, making us feel a little awkward as we had just been taking photos of him. Presumably he was there because the museum is in his district.

A few minutes later we saw Peter Kelly, Halifax's mayor, and Darrell Dexter, the newly elected Premier of Nova Scotia, exit together. Unfortunately it was hard to get a picture of them together as Kelly was literally running towards his car. We only managed to get a snap of the back of his head, at least I presume it is his head.

Eventually things began to pick up and the motorcade vehicles moved into position near the door. The best part about this was that once they were in position they completely blocked the Lieutenant Governor's exit. She had to make her way through the motorcade to her limo, which then had a few issues with the curb. All in all, it was rather undignified and I felt that she somehow drew the short end of the stick when it came to car access. I really would have imagined that the two groups would have managed to coordinate so that everyone could make a successful exit from the building.

Shortly thereafter Harper came out, waved, and got in his car. Within about a minute of his exit from the building he had taken off and almost all signs of the Prime Minister's visit were gone.

After the Primer Minister had taken off just about the only things that remained to indicate that something had happened were the two TV trucks that were still hanging around.

CTV's was a little smaller. We were wondering if they were sensitive about this.

The other car that we saw that was a little strange appears to be a military car, though we don't know who the guest of honour was. What we do know is that the thing above the license plate with two stars was covered until just before it picked up its passenger.

On our way home I stopped to pick up a coffee. As we were heading back to the apartment, with coffee in hand, I noticed that Mr. Lahey was standing across the street talking to some guys. As we had our cameras handy I snapped a pic of this local Halifax celebrity in his local environment.

If you can count spotting famous or influential people as being productive, today has been a pretty productive day so far.

A Few Quick Notes 237

-While today was passable for the better part of the day things eventually managed to go downhill. By this evening we were experiencing intermittent showers and gusts of wind, though this was nothing that I couldn't deal with.

-It seems that the video of the shopping cart races at Bubbles Mansion has been posted in a Trailer Park Boys forum. I am pretty impressed that within 24 hours someone had been searching for such videos and found mine. As far as I can tell it was the first one on YouTube to cover this year's event.

-As of today I have started to prepare my lectures for next week. Fortunately it seems that I will be speaking on a topic with which I feel relatively comfortable. On the other hand, I am still somewhat nervous about giving three hour long lectures. Hopefully they will be as successful as I imagine is possible. I guess as soon as I figure out the content I will have to start working on a few obscure jokes to fit in the lectures (it really is too bad that I am not covering the chapter on 'cleavages').

-Yesterday we purchased a full pork loin. At the moment it is rammed into the bottom of our fridge. It is likely that by tomorrow I will have to chop it up into pork chops so that we have some space and so that it doesn't go bad. I can't say that I am really looking forward to the idea of wrestling a 3 piece of meat on a counter that is only about 2.5 feet wide. The up side is that we should get about 30 pork chops out of the piece of meat. And it turns out that pork chops are very easy to cook.

"Bold Move by the Shit Hawks"

This evening while my mother, Neil, Rebecca and I were walking around downtown looking for a restaurant we noticed that there was some activity on a street just below Citadel Hill. I suggested that we try to head up and find out what it was. As we approached it became clear that the event was associated with Bubbles' Mansion and that the event was hosted by Bubbles himself.

Within a few minutes we figured out that Bubbles' Mansion was hosting a series of shopping cart races and that Bubbles was officiating and hosting the event. We were able to stake out a good position at the bottom of the course and watch a few of the heats.

In the first race we saw (and the one that is posted below) the Shit Hawks make a daring move and cut off their opponents. Bubbles was quite clearly shocked that they had made such an aggressive move, suggesting that it was a "Bold move by the Shit Hawks." For some number of minutes after the race he continued to comment on the gutsy/dangerous move made by the Shit Hawks.

Within a few minutes we were on to the final race. The teams made it down the hill without incident and headed towards one of the turn-around sections. Though we couldn't see it, it soon became clear that something happened on the turn and that the team that emerged second was less than pleased. As the second place team neared the finish line it was clear that one of their wheels was damaged and no longer fully functional.

Hopefully I will hear about Bubbles' cart races before they happen in the future as it would be nice to see a few more of the heats, and maybe even free up the evening so that I could attend the after party at Bubbles' Mansion.
