A Few Quick Notes 366

-We have had some rather nice weather these past few days. It seems that it hits about 10 degrees by mid afternoon, which is just about right for walking, and then drops to near zero in the evening, which is just about right for studying, reading, and sleeping.

-It seems that I will have a few Halloween parties to attend tomorrow evening. The first I will try to visit is a poli sci grad student event at a local bar/restaurant. The idea is that they will order some appetizers and a few pitchers and then people can get other things.

The second party I plan on attending is the history grad student event. I have been invited to this event because I am taking a graduate level history course this year (and the professor hosting the party is teaching the course). Anyway, aside from the bus ride out, I am looking forward to meeting a few of the history students/types.

Oh, my plan for a costume (all creative credit must go to my friend Jess) is that I will wear a black shirt and pants and then a white collar and go as a priest. The great thing about this is if I decide the costume is too much for me to handle I can take the collar off and then just be a regular looking guy. As I am not really particularly into Halloween costumes I think that this strikes a nice balance between close to nothing and an actual costume.

-On Wednesday we had our final Ultimate game of the fall season. In contrast to past game, we really came out swinging and dominated the entire game. We ended up winning 15 to 0.

I should mention that although the score is clearly quite lopsided, the other team really didn't seem to be playing that poorly (just not scoring). Furthermore, they are one of the most fun teams to play against. There were no rule disputes or poor calls, it was really great.

After the game we invited the other team to join us for a drink at the local country bar. We chose this bar because the last time we went the place was absolutely empty and we were able to take advantage of a few of their amenities (mainly the Wii and the full-size basketball net). This time it seemed that we weren't so lucky, instead of the place being empty we walked in on a multi-week karaoke contest.

Not surprisingly, our group wasn't really into the karaoke contest. Surprisingly, the bar's workers were really quite insistent that we move some of the furniture so that everyone could see the stage. In basically every other matter the staff were great, they frequently came back to make sure we had everything we needed and at one point brought out four large baskets of party mix (a snack food).

I guess I would have to say that after a little bit of initial hesitation, I had a really good time with the other team, and just generally at this particular bar (even if it was a country bar).

-It seems that I am up for another round of lithotripsy on Tuesday. I am a little curious to see if this is actually going to happen or if they will somehow manage to screw up my booking between now and then, as they have done twice already.

-It seems that I am on a bit of a humus tear recently. For the better part of the past few weeks I have almost always had a batch of humus in the fridge that I can tap into at any time. I guess this is likely an indication of my busyness and the fact that this is a food that I can just start eating with little prep work.

-I have been rather busy with grading for the past few days. My plan is to kill off the remnants tomorrow, which should then allow me some time to prepare for my upcoming classes.

-I should probably stop wasting time and get back to at least one of the many school-related things that I really should be doing.

A Few Quick Notes 241

-Today was a beautiful day. The sky was clear and the temperatures were pleasant all day.

-For dinner this evening we had roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, and vegetables. The beef was particularly beefy, which is how I like my beef.

-After dinner I started to make pea soup. The primary goal was to use some ham that I cooked a few days ago, it also was a good place to use some celery that is just a few days from kicking the bucket.

-A few days ago while looking at a flier I noticed that the store was selling a few things that I was interested in purchasing. Most importantly, the store was selling a card table for less than $40, which seemed like a good price.

This afternoon Neil and I took the bus to the store and scooped up the last of the tables. While in the store we also managed to pick up a few additional items that were on sale for at least 50% off of the regular price.

-In a break with recent tradition, last night I actually managed to socialize with some people other than Neil and Rebecca (not that there is anything wrong with them). I first went over to a classmate's house for a few beers before heading to a party at his friend's place. Though I didn't know all that many people I had a good time. It was particularly nice to get out and relax for a few hours.

As it was Halloween and a costume party I ended up dressing up. As I didn't have much time or money with which to pull together an elaborate costume I went as a pirate (vest, bandanna, and nautically themed 'tattoos'). Brian, my classmate, made a rather elaborate Dale Earnhardt, Jr. outfit. Amazingly, while everyone was in costume very few, if any, of the attendees were in gore based costumes. As I am not a fan of such costumes I was quite pleased with the choice of costumes worn by the other guests.

A Few Quick Notes 238

-The past few days have been on the cool side, which isn't all that bad as it means that I am sweating less on my walk to school. Today, unlike some of the days earlier in the week, is quite nice with clear skies and little wind.

-I still don't have any good on one liners or jokes for my upcoming lectures. As my first lecture is on Monday my time is running short, though maybe it is more appropriate that I spend my time preparing the actual content of the lecture rather than the jokes that I don't expect anyone to get.

For those of you who are curious, I don't expect that I will go to my Friday class in costume, though my short-shorts and pink top probably would help them to remember my lecture for years to come.

-Is it just me or have all Halloween costumes taken a turn for the slutty? No longer can one just go as a French maid, one must go as a slutty French maid.

If I can get my hands on a Dick Nixon mask I am thinking about trying to go (where I don't know) as "Slutty Richard Nixon," the side of Richard Nixon you have always wanted to see.

-Due to illness my presentation originally scheduled for last week went ahead yesterday. Though not superb, I think it was passable. My general problem with presentations is that they don't scare me enough to actually try and prepare for them. I always assume that I will just be able to wing it rather effectively, and as it turns out, this isn't a skill that I have.

After the presentation, while the professor was leading a discussion on the topic of the presentation, my pen started to leak all over my hands. I found this rather amusing because just a few days ago I was wondering if pens still did this, or whether pen design had moved so far in recent years that this phenomenon was a thing of the past. It seems that the answer is that pen design has not moved to a stage in which leaks are impossible, though they do seem rarer than even a few years ago.

-Based on a trend I am witnessing in my apartment I am starting to wonder if pork chops are the new ramen when it comes to cheap student eating. Though I have only witnessed an increase of pork consumption in this apartment, I presume that the frequent pork sales are a sign that other students are also doing their best to make sure that this is a trend, not just a blip in our apartment.

-Due to school work I have recently been falling behind on my newspaper reading. This is a little disappointing as I quite enjoy reading the newspaper.

-For a second Friday night in a row I will likely have to head into my library carrel to crank out a few hours of reading and work. On the up side, while at the library I will be able to pick up an inter-library loan book that came in, and maybe find a few materials for my upcoming lecture.

A Few Quick Notes 132

-Today is another crisp fall day. The temperature seems to be cool enough to allow snow, collected by car in other regions, to remain in frozen form. The sun is out, making it a nice day for a fall walk.

-We were hit by something big, I still don't know what, at work last night. From the time I started at 6:00 PM, until about midnight we worked non-stop. In particular, the period of 6:00 to 9:15 was particularly intense. Throughout the night I had the pleasure of bringing in about 7 kegs, three of the same beer (if that is any indicator of sales). We also had a non-stop stream of dishes. Possibly the most surprising element of the night was that we seemed to be short of just about every type of standard glass ( i.e. pint glasses, half pints, and singles glasses), the notable exception being collins glasses, of which we had a glut.

Another indicator of the business that we all experienced was that the kitchen sold out of pizza some period of time before the kitchen was to close.

-After a several week delay, I finally received my Halloween costume prize money. Though I had hoped for a few hundred dollars I ended up with $60.

-Last night a few of Nithum's friends crashed at our place. They were all in town to take standardized tests, mainly to aid entry to grad school or other post-graduate programs. While I hoped to meet them at some point today they were up and out of the apartment before I woke. I was particularly disappointed not to have met the world champion fencer that was one of the group, maybe next time.

-Though I am not an NHLer, I have decided to go with my own version of the 'playoff beard.' Since about Halloween, until now, and continuing until the 29th of November (prime assignment season) I have not been and will not be shaving.

-As much as I don't want to spend any time doing, it will need to prepare some food today. After several days of eating leftovers I am down to just about nothing in the fridge. Maybe I will be inspired on my walk home from school.

A Few Quick Notes 125

-Over the past few days temperatures have really started to drop in Montreal. Actually, just last night, for the time of the season, I was able to see my breath. Fortunately, the rain of a few days ago has let up and we are having a stretch of pleasant fall weather.

-The Thomson House Halloween party seemed to go relatively well, though the general consensus was that it wasn’t as busy as last year (even though we sold more tickets). This was backed up by tip rates, which were certainly lower than last year.

For the evening I was assigned door duties along with Nick. Each of us was supplied with a counter and he counted each time a person came in will I counted each time a person left. At peak times we had a difference of about 400 hundred in our counts, indicating that we had about 400 partygoers.

Along with counting, Nick and I were also responsible for admitting only those with tickets. Unfortunately, it seems that some people did not know that a pre-purchased ticket was mandatory. This meant that several well-costumed individuals were turned away at the door.

It also seems that I won the competition for best staff costume. Apparently there is some prize money, but I haven’t received anything yet.

-Our apartment door was getting quite bad this morning. It was so bad that it took me about ten minutes to open it, and I was only able to open it with the assistance of a knife. After my departure Nithum was able to contact the building manager and they sent someone to fix the problem.

-Today I started working on a project for which I was hired about two weeks ago. My primary task for the time being is to locate and copy a series of reports, with the eventual goal being an analysis of their contents. For much of the three hours I spend working today I was just familiarizing myself with the previously completed work and making changes to the tables outlining which documents in the series we actually have (as it seems that there are a number that we have that were not noted).

-I have been a bit lax on the blogging front the past few days because of school work. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will do a better job at managing my time so that I don’t have such a glut of work (though to some extent this is not avoidable because I only receive assignments a limited amount of time before they are due).

A Few Quick Notes 121

-Today has been another overcast and cool day. Though that does not mean it has been unpleasant. Hopefully the grey skies don’t mean that we are in for rain in the very near future.

-As many of you may know, today is the statutory Thanksgiving holiday. As some of you may also know, I generally have Mondays off. I guess what is surprising about today is that it really feels like a holiday weekend, even though it is basically the same as my typical weekend.

-While on a walk today I saw what might have been my first dog sled. The sled, without dogs, was strapped to a mini-van heading north on St. Laurent.

-If anyone has any ideas for a costume that I can wear to Thomson House for the Halloween party I would be appreciative. So far all of my ideas haven’t really been that great.

-This morning for breakfast I had something that was approaching what my uncle would call a ‘Big American Breakfast.’ Unfortunately, as I did not have a fried potato product I did not meet the qualifications. I did have scrambled eggs, toast, and bacon, making a pretty unhealthy meal.

-Much to my surprise, I was able to get down to work and finish a variety of assignment for my business and government information classes. Typically when I set such schedules for myself I fall flat on my face and accomplish next to nothing. Hopefully this means I am turning a new leaf and will be able to maintain or improve upon this standard in the future.
