A few minutes ago I was looking at a few articles through the Cambridge Journals website when I noticed a small RSS icon at the bottom of the page. After a little investigation I learned that I could subscribe to a feed for the journal I was looking at at the moment. This feed contains links to the articles and content published in the journal.
With a little more investigation I learned that I could subscribe to an aggregated feed containing content from any and all of the Cambridge Journals journals I am interested in. After quickly browsing their offerings I selected about a dozen journals that seemed relevant to my studies. Once a week I should be receiving updates about newly published articles in these journals.
Now that I have subscribed to these feeds I realize that I should have know about these features years ago and that I should probably find similar services from other major publishers and sign up to those feeds.
It is definitely a little embarrassing that I only just found this service.
And how did people get information before RSS feeds became so widely available?

A Few Quick Notes 548
-The past two days have been overcast and intermittently rainy. I guess this isn't too surprising an occurrence after a period of particularly dry weather. The other big change is that these days have also been much cooler than the days preceding them. I think it isn't even 20 degrees outside right now, which is a fair bit cooler than I would normally expect for this time of day.
-Our cherry tomato plants might finally be starting to set fruit, though it is a little hard to tell as the prospective fruit are still quite small. Hopefully it is the case that we have a few pre-cherry tomatoes.
Yesterday Jeannette and I finally got around to pruning them. It seems that we likely should have pruned the plants differently and now allowed them to grow as tall as they were allowed to grow. They really are out of control.
-My Google Reader account seems to be non-functional at the moment. And because I can't access it there is nothing I want to do more than check my Google Reader feeds. And because it isn't working I am checking for status changes every 30 seconds. This service would be causing me to waste much less time if it was functional right now.
-Yesterday I listened to an old episode of On The Media and heard an interview about the site 0 Views, a site dedicated to finding and then re-posting YouTube videos with 0 views. During the interview the site's manager noted that much of the content was really quite bad. Now that I have had a chance to check the site's content out I am in a position to agree with this individual, though is a little disappointing as I do find the idea of the site kind of entertaining.
-I guess I should stop wasting my time and get back to work (at least my time here hasn't been spent checking my non-functional Google Reader feeds).

A Few Quick Notes 361
-Today was a near-perfect Fall day. It was cool, but perfect for walking, and clear. The only aspect of today's weather that may mar its near-perfection is that it seems possible that we could have frost tonight.
-As some of you will have likely seen, earlier today we posted a survey. So far the response has been pretty good. If you haven't taken it already and are interested in checking it out just head here.
-My father is in town for the weekend to attend a meeting. While looking through some of the schedules that he forwarded to us I noticed that the conference planners had made plans assuming that the family members of the principle attendees would also be attending. With this knowledge in hand I suggested to my father that he might try to snag us an invite to the dinner and comedy show tonight. Not surprisingly, he was interested in seeing if this would be possible.
Almost immediately I realized that I likely wouldn't be able to attend even if my father was successful as I would have school work to do (which I am actively avoiding at the moment). It turned out that Neil and Rebecca were free and were able to take advantage of the invitation to the event.
-A few days ago I read that MUNSU lost close to $100 000 on its September Snoop Dogg show. In the following days CBC carried the story and confirmed the size of the loss. Sadly, I am not particularly surprised that this show wasn't a success for MUNSU. Hopefully this loss isn't too problematic for them.
-For a few days it seemed that Gadhafi would be making a quick visit to St. John's. Now it seems that he won't be pitching his tent in St. John's, which I think is rather unfortunate. I guess such a visit isn't particularly appealing when you know that the foreign minister will be there to give you a lecture.
-I guess I should try to get back to reading I keep referencing.

A Few Quick Notes 275
-Though we were lead to believe that we were in for a significant rainfall and storm late last night and this morning it didn't really materialize. Aside from a few hours of rain in the middle of the night (according to Environment Canada), we only had a small amount of precipitation during the day. Though we didn't get the promised storm, the day was pretty poor. The skies were overcast and the wind was up for most of the day, though on occasion the sun managed to break through for a few minutes at a time.
-A few weeks ago I mentioned that I had started using Google Reader to check the blogs that I regularly read. I am now just over a month in and am definitely quite impressed with the service. I definitely read a larger number of blogs than I did just a month ago, but I feel as though I spend less time doing it. I get the time saving by checking one location multiple times a day instead of checking a multiple of sites multiple times a day.
A feature that I particularly like, though it doesn't really have to do much with content is the Trends section of Google Reader. Not only can I ascertain how many posts I have read, but I can get a sense of at which time of day the most posts are made, when I read the most posts, and how many people subscribe to particular blogs. I am sure that I blow some of my time savings browsing through this feature each day.
-On a related topic, the blog-off seems to have boosted our readership, or at least made it more consistent. On the other hand, it may have nothing to do with the competitive element of the blog-off, but simply that we are posting more than we have in months. In many instances our posts also contain some form of audio-visual content, a perennial favourite with the childrens.
-Given my recent success with beans and legumes in the pressure cooker I decided to see if I could extend my streak tonight with a lentil and pork stew. Though I didn't really hear much from Rebecca and Neil, I know that I was quite pleased with the outcome. I was also pleased with the corn bread that I made to accompany the meal.
For some reason it seems that I had forgotten about corn bread for a few months until about two weeks ago. Since then I have made it on a number of occasions. Aside from the flavour, one of the things I like about it is that it is both quick to prepare and bake. Additionally, it seems to go well with these moderately spiced stew type things that I have been preparing.
-Neil and da missus is gettin' on da sauce now in a few minutes. Seems one a da b'ys from up to da school' got his missus in town and wants her to meet a few a da b'ys and get on da G.O. da same time. B'y, sounds half good to me, but if dem two comes back sauced der 'ill be werds. B'y, I don't want none a dat behaviour in dis apartment, we lives good and clean around here. Dat being said, I wouldn't half mind going on a tear wit da b'ys meself one a dese days, jayz, b'y, maybe I gets 'er done tomarrah.

A Few Quick Notes 263
-For the past few days it has been on the cold side, some days going as low as -21 (maybe even colder). Today was a bit warmer, and it is forecast to be warmer still tomorrow. Unfortunately, with the rising temperatures we are supposed to get some snow, rain, and ice pellets, which seems like quite the combination.
-I managed to crank out another two loaves of bread this morning while preparing breakfast and working on school related things. It seems that Wednesday morning is a good day for me to do some bread baking.
-Today I had the opportunity to do some poking around in the Novanet catalogue (the union catalogue for Nova Scotia post-secondary institutions). The more I use this catalogue the more I think that it was designed to prevent access to materials. Not only are there all kinds of duplicate, and confusing, records, in many cases the records don't reflect what is actually available in the library (particularly when it comes to electronic journal access). I really don't understand how such a catalogue could have ever been deemed acceptable by any of the participating institutions.
-Recently I have been thinking that what we consider to be our tastes/preferences are really just functions of availability (mark another one up in the original thought tally).
-A few days ago I started using Google Reader. While I don't like everything about the service, I am generally pretty satisfied. I am somewhat amazed that it took me this long to start using a feed aggregator of some sort, particularly as there are a number of blogs that I check on a regular basis.
-I have to give my second round of lectures starting next week. Again I seem to have lucked out and picked a topic that I am familiar with and that relates to topics I have been reading about already this term. Hopefully they go a little more smoothly that some of my first lectures.
-We will be having a pot roast for dinner. Actually, I should consider taking things out of the oven in the very near future.
-A few days ago I came across the video for Colleen Power's new song New Townie Man. I was immediately taken with the piece, but that is likely only because I am townie male, and they tend to do pretty well in this piece.
Yesterday I was talking to a friend, who happens to be a 'bayman,' about this song and he expects that several responses to this song will be drafted and posted in the coming days and weeks. I really hope he is right, adding a Compton and Juice vs. Gazeebow Unit feel to this video and the resulting discourse would be great.
