At about 7:40 AM on Friday morning I was started to think that my alarm clock was a reader of this blog, or at least my recent post about looking forward to the recent time change. I was beginning to think this because, for no apparent reason, in the wee hours of the morning on Friday the alarm clock 'sprung forward' all on its own, and without any indication that it was about to do this.
Of course this meant that I ended up waking up an hour earlier than I had planned. And because the alarm clock's time had changed I didn't immediately notice the change. As far as I knew the tiredness I was feeling was nothing more than normal tiredness that is a result of staying up a little too late.
It wasn't until I was part way through breakfast that I looked at the microwave clock and started to sense that something was off. Instead of saying 8:something AM, the microwave was indicating that it was still 7:something AM. As the microwave has been at least a few minutes off for the past few months I assumed that it was wrong or partially wrong.
I was eventually able to figure things out by checking the clock on the coffee maker. By finding that this clock, which was not changed to reflect the Autumnal time change, agreed with the alarm clock I was able to finally confirm that the alarm clock was the problem.
The upshot of all of this is that it seemed a little easier to get up this morning at the new time. Maybe that's because I slept in or maybe that's because my alarm clock prepped me for the change a few days early.

Three ingredient bread pt. 1
Last night I had a dream, a very unexciting dream. I dreamt that, like the French, I could make a three ingredient bread. Unlike the classic French bread recipe my bread would not have water, flour, and yeast but pumpkin puree, flour, and yeast. As far as crazy dream recipes go, this one at least seems not to be entirely implausible.
Well, I am now in the midst of turning my dream into reality.
Well, I am now in the midst of turning my dream into reality.
I'm pretty sure this is exactly what people are talking about when they talk about hoping their dreams will come true.

A Few Quick Notes 448
-Today has been one of the hottest days I have experienced in years, or at least that is how it feels. The temperatures exceeded 30, a situation that was made worse by relatively high humidity. Even when it became a little overcast this afternoon it stayed hot and unpleasant.
-Actually, it is so hot and sticky that as I sit writing this I am dripping sweat, a rather unpleasant image I know (and this is with a fan on). I am a little concerned that the current weather conditions may make sleeping difficult.
-Our apartment's Empire Avenue feeding frenzy has continued, somewhat abated, today.
I should first note, before forgetting, that Neil, Rebecca, Jeannette, and I achieved some success as a result of our actions yesterday. Neil, Rebecca, Jeannette, and I all made the list for participants with the greatest single day value increases (I was 1, Neil was 2, Jeannette was 6, and Rebecca was 8). Rebecca, Jeannette, and I were also near the top of another list of that day's achievers.
Things did slow down a little today. One of the first reasons for the slow down was that I realized that I actually had some work to do and observed that it was not possible for me to play an online game and work at the same time. Neil and Jeannette were later held up by the system itself as they both reached their daily transaction limits and thus had an enforced break.
That being said, today was definitely another heavy Empire Avenue day for our apartment. Actually, we even added a new person to the mix, Nick, Rebecca's brother. Nick signed up for an account today and will be coming to stay with us for a few days as of tomorrow, so if we are lucky we might be able to have five people online and circle buying in the same room (what fun!).
-Wow, it is hot. I really hope it isn't this hot tomorrow as I have agreed to help a few friends move.

A Few Quick Notes 417
-We have some really beautiful weather recently. While today wasn't as warm as it has been, it was certainly still a very beautiful day.
-I am now 4/20, which might be restated as 1/5, in this year's Roll Up the Rim to Win contest. So it seems that I am actually doing much better than expected. I would have to drop to 4/36 to be where one would expect to be, and then below that to be doing worse than average. So maybe this year hasn't been quite as much of a wash as I was thinking it would be.
-I am not sure quite what it is, but our post Underlining Fail seems to be quite frequently hit with spam comments. Though we have more of these in recent months than we have ever had before, this one post seems to attract the majority of them. I am always somewhat teased when I see that we new comment only to find out that we have once again been spammed.
-For the past two nights I have had my sleep disrupted by what I presume is a mouse in the wall between the two bedrooms in our apartment. The ruckus was so loud last night that both Rebecca and I were basically unable to sleep for more than an hour at around 4:00 AM. The worst part of all of this is that it almost sounded as though the little guys were chewing/tugging on some of the wiring in the wall.
Tonight I reported the problem to the superintendent's husband, who indicated that he would call an exterminator tomorrow (or throw down a few glue traps if he had them). Both Rebecca and I are really hoping that we end up with the exterminator rather than glue traps (which won't be anywhere close to the problem).
-We are down to our final few bottles of Club Soda. Apparently 56 liters of Club Soda doesn't last all that long.
-Today I had my last class for the term. I still have a few things to take care of before my 'summer' starts. Of course, it being summer means that instead of classes to attend each day I will have reading to attend to. Should be fun.
-One of my department's senior professors retired last Summer, though is only now being thrown out of his office. To prepare for the move he is getting rid of many of his books. I was able to pick up a few that should be relevant to my thesis research, as well as a few that relate to personal interests. The most noteworthy of my picks, at least from the standpoint of my place of birth, was Smallwood: The Unlikely Revolutionary by Richard Gwyn (I am presently part way through Gwyn's biography of Macdonald). Oh, I also picked up a copy of Creighton's biography of Macdonald (and to think that just yesterday I had a conversation with a friend in which I claimed to be better at reducing my acquisition tendencies than I had been in the past).

A Few Quick Notes 416
-Though the sun has now set, today has been and continues to be a beautiful day. According to Environment Canada we reached a high of 21, which is believable.
-It seems that I am now up to 3/18 with my Roll Up the Rim to Rim Wins. I am starting to think that I should have quit when I was ahead this year.
-Today I took advantage of the nice weather and went on a bike ride with a friend/neighbour. We rode from our apartment building deep in the South End, around the rotary to Herring Cove. According to this friend, who has made the trip before, the total distance is close to 30 km. Assuming this is true, and I have to reason to think it isn't, this is likely the longest bike ride I have ever taken. I hope that we will be able to go on similar trips as the summer progresses and that by the end of the Summer/Fall I won't be quite as slow as I was today.
-On Thursday I handed in my final major paper of the season. Though I still have two more pieces of written work to submit, and a final exam, handing in the final paper on Thursday was quite a relief.
-We are planning on a having a few people over for Easter dinner tomorrow. To the best of our knowledge we have everything that we need from the grocery store, if not we are going to be somewhat out of luck as most of the stores will be closed tomorrow.
-In preparation for tomorrow's dinner I baked some bread so that I would have stuffing material. Shortly we are going to start working on the Easter bread for tomorrow. If we become particularly ambitious we may even try to do some vegetable peeling before we call it a night.
-I think I will try to call it a night early tonight. I am hoping that the the fact that I didn't take a nap and that I did take a 30 km bike ride will mean that I will be able to go to sleep before 4:00 AM.
-Happy Easter

A Few Quick Notes 392
-Today was another rather chilly day, though nowhere near as cold as it was earlier this week. While there were a few snowflakes today, if my memory serves me correctly, there really wasn't any accumulation to talk of.
-We had a nice tofu and chicken stir-fry for dinner tonight.
-I need to try to go to bed early tonight so that I can wake up early tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, I really don't see how this is going to turn out well in the end.
-While I was sitting in class this afternoon it became apparent that for some reason just about everyone in class was out of it, even those of us who tend to be quite active and participate frequently. This was particularly strange as I am quite confident that many of us keeners completed the assigned readings, so it wasn't as though we weren't ready. The most likely explanation is that many of us were tired as a result of working late last night to complete papers that were due during today's class.
-I have some marking and research work that I really need to work on tomorrow. Hopefully my modified schedule won't mess me up too much.
-Word on the street is that Neil is a little dissatisfied with a few of my recent posts. He thinks that they were a little to self-referential and void of content. While I think that he is likely correct, they did meet the minimum requirements to qualify for the blog-off, which we at least in part suggested by him, so I don't feel too bad about them. Furthermore, as some of us may recall, he managed to squeak to victory by making a series of such posts in the dying moments of last year's competition.

How is it possible that I am tired
So far today I have had three Coke Zeros, 1 liter of coffee, 2 cups of tea, and 1 hour long nap, yet I am still exhausted.
Not just exhausted but so tired I am having trouble concentrating.
And all of this is less than twelve hours after I woke up this morning. How is it possible that I can feel as though I could go to sleep right now?
As I have a few more things to do tonight I will have to find a way to power through for at least a few more hours.

A Few Quick Notes 352
-I was going to say that today was pretty nice then I realized that I couldn't really remember if that was the case. Upon a little more reflection I might have to say that today was passable, but not great. For the better part of the day it was overcast, though not really wet. At some points I recall feeling hot and sweaty, but that may not have had anything to do with the weather.
-What a weird night I had last night. After submitting my thesis to my committee and cracking into a few celebratory beers I got some unexpected (though it should have been expected) news. This, at about 4:00 AM, got me all hepped up and whatnot, completely removing any chance that I might be able to sleep in the next few hours.
I eventually decided that I would just stay up, go out to get a celebratory breakfast, and then head in to Dal to run an errand. Much to my surprise, I was actually able to do all of this, basically on the timeframe I set myself. I eventually made it back here and was ready to go to sleep at about 10:30 AM. I woke up at about 2:30 PM, feeling surprisingly refreshed.
Since then, much to my surprise, I have continued to feel rather alert and full. Actually, since about 6:00 AM I haven't had anything to eat, and I am not particularly hungry.
The more I think about it the more I think that I should probably just eat something.
-This evening, while running some errands, I was able to ride my bike. It was great to be out on the road, even though the trip was quite short. I wish I was a little more motivated to bike regularly.
-Today while at the grocery store I purchased for bags of discount corn chips for 99 cents a bag. As far as I can tell they appear to be completely fine. I wonder if they might be discontinuing the product. I guess I might try some tonight and determine whether they were worth my 99 cents.
-A few times in the past few days I have mentioned that I am trying to reduce my red meat consumption for kidney stone related reasons. Much to my surprise, this has been going remarkably well. Over the past week I have consumed almost no meat. Not surprisingly, my bean consumption (in various forms) has skyrocketed. Not only have I been having refried bean nachos, but I have been eating quite a bit of humus, and also some of my standard pressure-cooker bean dishes. I wonder if I will be able to keep this up once Neil and Rebecca return?
