Well, though I saw some snow a while ago it seems to have stopped, or at least come close to stopping.
I find it funny that the conditions seem to have improved as the storm system seems to have more definitively moved into the region.
I guess I am curious to see how things play out as the night progresses.

Storm? - 2
Well, it has been a few hours since my last post and there are still no signs of snow. On the other hand, we have had plenty of rain in the past few hours. Given that the temperature is several degrees above freezing it seems reasonable to think that the rain, rather than snow, might continue for at least another few hours. Furthermore, the latest warning from Environment Canada seems to suggest that rain, rather than snow, is what we should expect (though we might be on the snow/rain border).
That being said, there is still definitely a big weather system just off the coast.

So word on the street is that we are in for some kind of storm today. So far today kind of just looks like a pretty regular grey winter's day, maybe even a little on the warm side.
Of course, the satellite imagery really does make it look as though there is the possibility that we might actually get close to the 30 cm that we are forecast to get.

That really does look as though it could be nasty (thought it could miss us if we're lucky). I guess this is further motivation to take care of our on-the-road-again errands earlier in the day than we had originally planned. Hopefully we can be off the road by the time this thing hits.

Only halfway there?
It's certainly something
Well, as predicted we are receiving some snow (though when I woke up it hadn't yet started snowing). And so far the snow and the gloomy forecast have lead to quite a number of closures (with more in the works).
What troubles me is that it looks like the majority of this system is heading north of much of Nova Scotia so I really don't know how bad it will be for the rest of the day. I guess if it makes a sudden shift south we will be in for it, but otherwise I wonder if we might not just get the gentle, if steady, snowfall that we are getting at the moment.
Of course, if/when this turns to rain things could become quite treacherous on the roads.
Anyway, I guess I will allow myself to be distracted by the weather conditions as the day progresses, though I hope the extent of this distraction is limited. There is nothing worse than being completely and uncontrollably enthralled in a non-event.

This looks yummy
It seems that the first major snowfall warning of the season has been issued, and if the satellite imagery means anything I think that we will be due at least for some quantity of precipitation tomorrow.
Hopefully I won't have to spend too much time out in the snow/rain.
And I guess this also means that we may have to pick up some salt for our steps.

Looks like it might be a storm pt. 6
We are now in the middle of prime time in Halifax and the snowfall seems to have at least hit a temporary lull. For the past two or three hours things have really slowed down. Nonetheless, the previous few hours of snow seems to have left us with about 30 centimeters of snow.
The satellite imagery seems to confirm this state of affairs. Actually, the satellite imagery seems to suggest that the storm has completely passed Nova Scotia and will be approaching or reaching Newfoundland shortly.
This also suggests that Dalhousie likely won't be closed tomorrow, though this is fine with me as there is something that I wouldn't mind doing there tomorrow.
Anyway, as the storm seems to have ended I will now end my live storm updates.

Looks like it might be a storm pt. 2
Well, almost immediately after my last post it finally started to snow. Since the snow started to fall a few hours ago it has continued and is now really starting to accumulate. I think that it would be fair to guess that we have received at least 5 cm already, though I guess I could be off by a centimeter or two. If this keeps up we will definitely have a substantial snowfall by the time evening hits.
Interestingly, the big blob of the storm seems to have moved off-shore, though there appears to be a splotch of intensity just inland.
I can't quite tell if this is to head our way or not. I guess only time will tell.
While Jeannette and I were returning from our eye appointments we noticed that there appeared to be something of a gathering in the park across the street from the Public Gardens. Upon further investigation we realized that we were witnessing Halifax's student day of action, a protest about rising tuition fees. I was shocked to see so many students decided to head out in the relatively poor weather.

Ok, back to storm watching and work.

Halifax gets her snow on
It seems that while I was it the kitchen having some lunch it started to snow.
[Embedded video]
Amazingly, almost as soon as I returned to work/my desk things calmed down. Of course, given the size of the storm system and the whiteness of the skies I don't expect that Halifax has seen the last of this snowfall. Actually, the satellite imagery seems to suggest that we have only seen the beginning of what this thing likely has to offer.

It should be a nice winter's evening.

There might be something to this snowfall thing
Based on the available satellite imagery it appears that there may actually be something of a storm system off of the coast of Nova Scotia. So, I guess I am now at least convinced that something will happen here weather-wise within the next few hours. Of course, this thing could head along the coast and basically miss us (and that seems entirely plausible).

Anyway, I am certainly now a little more excited than I was a few minutes.

Winter Rain: 1
What would a blog-off be with out a little live-blogging action to boost some numbers?
As far as I am concerned, not to have at least a little live-blogging would suggest that one or both of the competitors aren't really into the game. In such a case, winning, as they used to say about Elvis, has left the building.
It turns out that I was presented with quite a live-blogging opportunity this afternoon: a weather warning from Environment Canada. It seems that some areas, though I can't exactly figure out if Halifax is included, are forecast to receive as much as 100 millimeters of rain and possibly experience high winds.
While I am frequently skeptical about such warnings as so many of the times they are issued they turn out to result in nothing, in this case the available satellite imagery seems to suggest that we are actually due for some kind of serious weather in the not too distant future. Based on the movement of the storm it even seems that Halifax may really be in for something of a lashing.

Source: Environment Canada
Though the expected rain hasn't started falling in Halifax (which isn't surprising as the storm center is still clearly a ways away) the winds have definitely picked up and even started to howl (which givens the darkened skies a rather ominous feel).
I keep you posted on the development as the night progresses (hopefully my updates will either be sparse enough that you won't start to rely on them or frequent enough to keep you regularly coming back for more).
