Easter Update 1

So it is now Easter morning.

We started things off with Easter baskets, though none of us really hit the candy particularly hard.

Almost immediately we noticed that my Easter basket had a copy of Milles Bornes. Not surprisingly we cracked it out and started to play a few rounds.

Right now we are in the midst of breakfast preparation (bacon, eggs, and bunny bread).

I guess I should go tend to the bacon.

A Few Quick Notes 359

-Today (Sunday) was a pretty bland day as far as I can recall, though at moments the sun did shine rather intensely. Fortunately, unlike last night, we are not presently in the midst of a frost warning.

-Tonight for dinner we had black beans, couscous, and vegetables. I tapped into my new 5 kg bags of beans and couscous during the preparation process. Much to my surprise, the whole wheat couscous were pretty good, and didn't taste as 'healthy' as I imagined they might, which is good as we have almost 5 kg of them.

-I went for a very pleasant walk this evening. Instead of my normal distance, I went a few blocks further along Spring Garden, almost to Coburg. It was quite nice to get out of the apartment for a while and soak up some of crisp fall air.

-Last night while I was moving my plants in to protect them from the possibility of frost I managed to knock the ripest of the tomatoes off. Though it is not quite as ripe as I would have liked, I think that it is close enough to ripe that I might be able to convince Neil to give it a shot.

The other good tomato related news is that a few of the other tomatoes seem to be turning reddish, though I fear that they still won't be ripe before the real frost threat hits. Though at this point I guess there isn't much that I can do aside from wait and move the plants in at night.

-The peppers are also continuing to develop nicely. Though I don't have an exact count, I wouldn't be surprised if we had about a dozen at various stages by the end of the week.

-The Thermos I mentioned buying a few days ago has seen pretty steady use since its purchase. Actually, today I used it for both coffee and tea, though the latter beverage was a bit of a mistake as it ended up being very strongly influenced by the earlier beverage.

-My sense of things is that for the past few days I have been forgetting to eat lunch. I don't seem to notice that this has happened until I sit down for dinner, when it is a little to late to do anything about rectifying the problem.

-For some reason that I don't quite understand I decided to make myself a more elaborate breakfast than usual this morning. Along with my usual toast I also prepared some scrambled eggs and a half a pound of bacon. I think that my elaborate breakfast then inspired Neil and Rebecca to also do something a little fancier than normal, though aside from having a sense that they prepared a few sausages I don't know what else they had.

-While at the grocery store this afternoon I decided to swing by the seafood section to see if there were any deals I might be interested in taking advantage of. As it turns out, there was one such deal. I managed to pick up a marlin steak, or something approximating such a cut of meat, for about $2.25. Hopefully it is a good as the discount shark I purchased a few weeks ago.

A Few Quick Notes 307

-Eventually today turned into a pretty nice day. Unfortunately, I haven't managed to spend quite as much time outdoors as I would have liked, and when I was outside things were a little less than perfect. Hopefully it will be even nicer tomorrow and I will have an opportunity to head outside (maybe even to Point Pleasant Park).

-Neil and I attended the Halifax Comedy Festival event International House of Comedy last night in the Schooner Showroom at Casino Nova Scotia. Our main justification for going was to see Dave Shumka of the podcast Stop Podcasting Yourself. I was also quite interested in seeing John Wing and Reggie Watts. A number of other comedians were performing along side these three (Natalie Gray was another of those that we saw last night).

Neil and I were particularly impressed with Mr. Shumka, and generally the first half of the show. I am not sure if it was because I was tired or if the performers in the second half of the show generally weren't as good, but I definitely didn't enjoy it as much as the first half. I guess the good thing is that I have learned that I don't quite have the stamina for ten performers in a row (or maybe I was just tired).

-Moments ago I returned from the grocery store. My main justification for the trip was to pick up some chicken that was on sale. I quickly learned that they were out of the particular item that I was looking for. Given that the sale had been on all week and the store was to close in less than half an hour I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Maybe I will eventually learn not to leave things until the last minute, though I think that this is doubtful.

-We had more beans for dinner tonight, this time we went for white kidney beans. I was particularly pleased with this batch. I think that adding a half pound of bacon to the mix really helped things along.

The more we have beans the more Neil and I are of the opinion that we really don't have much reason to stray from black beans. I guess once we get through the 6 or 7 pounds of other types of beans we can stick to purchasing black beans (though I don't think that I would mind white kidney beans once in a while). I also think that we might consider trying navy beans again, for some reason I imagine them to be somewhat similar in texture and flavour to black beans (though I don't know why I might think this).

-A few days ago my sister's school, Brother Rice Junior High, was set on fire by a local arsonist. Though the damage wasn't catastrophic, it was enough to close the school for a month. Obviously they had to come up with a plan for students for the next month.

Just today the plan for the displaced students was announced. It seems that these students will be sent to another school for the coming month. The catch is that the Brother Rice students will be doing the afternoon/evening shift while the original students get the morning shift. This is going to be quite a bummer for everyone involved. I imagine that most of the Brother Rice students will be quite glad to get back to their old school as quickly as possible.

I guess what I find funny about all of this is that when I was my sister's age I can't imagine anything that I would have wanted more than for my school to catch on fire and close for some period of time. Though as my mother pointed out today, there is likely nothing that I would have disliked more than having to be bussed to a new school for a month. As luck would have it, I avoided having to face such a circumstance (though I did mange to luck out and get a multi-week teachers strike for the end of grade six).

A Few Quick Notes 130

-Today seemed a little warmer than yesterday, though on the crisp side of things. Other than that it was pretty unexciting in terms of weather.

-For breakfast this morning I made myself some scones. It has been a while since I have done this, something that I was reminded of during a conversation on the topic a few days ago. Unfortunately, the scones didn’t have quite the right texture, though they were still quite edible.

-For the past few hours I have been preparing a batch of beef stew for dinner. In a short while I will try to peel the potatoes and add them, finishing the last major step before the product is to be served.

-Since we put the curtain up last night Nithum has been taking advantage of his added privacy, something that I don’t find surprising at all. As far as I know, the curtains haven’t actually been fully opened since they were installed.

-I have been reading a fair bit about Access to Information laws over the past few days. Not only do I have to assist in the preparation of a presentation on the topic, but I also have to write an archives related paper on the subject.

-All week Nithum and I had been looking forward to the Saturday and Sunday only 50% off bacon sale at the local grocery store. Unfortunately, by the time that I made it to the store late this morning they had sold out. In the end I just purchased some crackers, garlic, and discount flour.

A Few Quick Notes 121

-Today has been another overcast and cool day. Though that does not mean it has been unpleasant. Hopefully the grey skies don’t mean that we are in for rain in the very near future.

-As many of you may know, today is the statutory Thanksgiving holiday. As some of you may also know, I generally have Mondays off. I guess what is surprising about today is that it really feels like a holiday weekend, even though it is basically the same as my typical weekend.

-While on a walk today I saw what might have been my first dog sled. The sled, without dogs, was strapped to a mini-van heading north on St. Laurent.

-If anyone has any ideas for a costume that I can wear to Thomson House for the Halloween party I would be appreciative. So far all of my ideas haven’t really been that great.

-This morning for breakfast I had something that was approaching what my uncle would call a ‘Big American Breakfast.’ Unfortunately, as I did not have a fried potato product I did not meet the qualifications. I did have scrambled eggs, toast, and bacon, making a pretty unhealthy meal.

-Much to my surprise, I was able to get down to work and finish a variety of assignment for my business and government information classes. Typically when I set such schedules for myself I fall flat on my face and accomplish next to nothing. Hopefully this means I am turning a new leaf and will be able to maintain or improve upon this standard in the future.
