I have recently been wondering why Canada is called Canada and why it doesn’t have a name more indicative of its federal nature.
If Canada began as the coming together of three colonies (the United Province of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia) to form a federation of four provinces why was the name of the resulting country Canada? That this became the name of the country seems particularly striking as in the years before confederation ‘Canada’ clearly referred to the area that is presently Ontario and Quebec.

Didn't you watch the heritage moment? It means "nation" and CA-NA-DA is it's name.
That may explain the source of the name Canada, but not why it was applied to all of what is now Canada - something along the lines of United Colonies of British North America almost seems more reasonable (and in line with naming conventions used in the UK and USA, not to mention the USSR).
And Esados Unidos dos Mexicanos.
I think it was originally "Adanac", just like Toronto was "Otnorot".
Maybe to avoid the American example? Australia is another example of a Commonwealth federation without a name describing its form of government. Others include Argentina, Belgium, and Switzerland.
The issue relates more so to the fact that the name of one of the units became the general name for the newly formed federation. How did they chose to use that name? I also find it curious that the legislation passed that has since served as the basis of the Canadian constitution was called the British North America Act, not the Canada Act. It seems funny that they would create a new entity and not even include the name of the new entity in the title of the legislation.
